The Story of Don Julio Tequila
Don Julio Tequila is named after its formidable founder, Don Julio Gonzalez-Frausto Estrada, who was born in 1995 in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. When his father died, leaving behind a wife and seven children, Julio was forced to become the sole breadwinner of his house at just 15 years old.

He took a job as a farmhand, but his income of nine pesos a week couldn’t support a family of eight. In 1942, with nothing but passion, Julio approached the wealthiest merchant in the Mexican town of Atotonilco for a loan to open his distillery. Seeing exceptional drive in the young man, the merchant gave him 20,000 pesos, and Julio got to work.

He soon purchased his first distillery, later naming it La Primavera. This was the first step on his journey to creating an iconic Don Julio Band, the world’s first luxury premium Tequila.

Transforming Tequila
Over the next 40 years, Don Julio Gonzalez revolutionized the tequila industry. He chose quality over quantity, planting each agave plant further apart to give them room to grow. He only selected the most succulent portion of the pina before slowly roasting it for 72 hours. Due to this, It has become the first authentic luxury tequila richer and smoother than anything that had come before.

Don Julio Tequila Today
Today, the brand has six core expressions: Blanco, Añejo, Reposado, 70 Crisalino, 1942 and Reserva. Making the Tequila is a showcase of quality craft. The agaves are grown in the microclimate and mineral-rich red clay soils of Jalisco and harvested after seven to 10 years. Then, the Pencas (Leaves) are cut from the pinas, cut into thirds or quarters, and steam-cooked in traditional masonry ovens for the aged expressions over three days before going into white oak casks.

These Meticulous methods are a testament to Estrada’s love for his craft. His unconventional methods include planting the agaves further apart and even whispering to his agaves.

The Legacy
When Don Julio sadly passed away on Tuesday, 20 March 2012, there was an outpouring of love for the tequila pioneers. In a statement presented by Global Tequila for Diageo, Maggie Lapcewich wrote,

Throughout his life, Don Julio worked arduously, neither allowing himself to fail nor succumbing to adversities. He always fought and prevailed in his perseverance to achieve his goals… Many describe the journey of Don Julio’s life as honest, just, and fair. He remained loyal to his beliefs and was committed to his work and family… We know that his legacy will live on.
