Wood Finishing: Early Explorers of South America
While Amburana is a commonly harvested tree in South America, this was a new find for a craft distilled spirits producer like us. Amburana is known as “Brazilian Oak” and often used in South America for making essential oils, crafting luxury furniture and barrel aging Brazil's most popular spirit, Cachaça.

Our partner cooperage uses a patented technique to honeycomb drill small holes into the Amburana staves, allowing more wood surface interaction with the Bourbon. After aging RD1 Kentucky Straight Bourbon for 4+ years, we insert the Amburana staves into the barrel. It doesn’t take long for Amburana’s character to beautifully influence the bourbon. The end result represents RD1's curiosity to learn, experience, explore.

The Experience: A Step Beyond Bourbon
The best of baking spices – apple cinnamon, nutmeg and light brown sugar – come alive on the nose and are followed by pine, vanilla, peaches and apricots. Flavor galore with spice cake, and ginger snaps in a rich mouthfeel. Try a drop of water to open up hints of herbal black tea, dark berry jam and pineapple pepper. Finish is long and warm, and ends with allspice and sweet oak.

The Craft: Exploring the Bourbon Frontier
In this Double Finish, we took French Oak staves (first finish) that were steeped in a patented process of pressure, oxygen, time and temperature with maple syrup (second finish). The molecular transfusion into the base fibers of the wood is wonderfully artistic and scientifically intense. Consistency is the driver here for flavor and texture.

After RD1 Spirit's Kentucky Straight Bourbon aged for 4+ years, we inserted the French Oak and Maple stave wood into the barrel for additional aging. The end result is like the best stack of pancakes you've ever had.

The Experience: A Dessert-Like Sipper
An undeniable burst of maple and butterscotch on the nose followed by lightly toasted caramel, roasted pecans and paprika. Its flavor boasts a delicate dance of maple goodness and black peppercorn spice. The finish is long, smooth and spicy with a light accent of toasted caramel at the end. The Craft: Kentucky Through and Through
RD1 Spirit’s Straight Bourbon is distilled in Kentucky using 100% copper equipment, aged 4+ years in Kentucky and bottled in Kentucky. We use 100% Kentucky corn and local limestone well water in our sour mash (also non-chill filtered). This traditional mash bill of 70% corn, 21% rye and 9% malted barley is a Bluegrass favorite for a reason.

The Packaging: Honoring the Past With Eyes Wide Open to the Future
RD1's custom glass bottle honors the first federally registered distillery in Lexington and the many brands it produced - the beautiful tree on the neck label is reminiscent of Ashland Distillery's old label and the glass lettering honors the Old William Tarr bottle. RD1's modern, concave bottle shape features the iconic horse farm fences of Lexington around the base in etched glass.

Day of the Dead, Día de los Muertos, is not, in fact, a morbid custom, nor is it only one day. Each year, in most countries that celebrate this 3,000 year-old Meso-American custom, it is divided between October 31st through November 2nd (please see our FAQ section for an explanation of how each day is celebrated).

“KAH” translates to “life” in the ancient Mayan language, and DoD is, in fact, is a celebration of lives lived.

Most common rituals
During the festival, private altars (ofrendas) are adorned with decorative skeletal images (calaveras) or stand-alone skulls (also called “sugar skulls”) and typically festooned with the traditional holiday flower—marigolds. It is thought the golden yellow-orange flower can act as a beacon to guide lost souls to the altar put there by their loved ones. Personal photographs and other colorful ornamentation and mementos are also placed on the ofrendas.

Traditions and rituals vary in countries that celebrate Día de los Muertos and can even differ within the same country. For instance, in Peru, La Diablada, the Dance of Satan (as depicted on our Reposado packaging), and only takes place in Puno. And in Bolivia, actual skulls are placed on ofrendas (as depicted in our Blanco packaging), and this ritual is held later, on November 8th.

Introducing Orchard Cobbler, the third release in our boundary-pushing and experimental Huntress series. Truly a one-of-a-kind limited edition whisky, in that the spirit used is only produced once a year when the distillers cross over from one distillation recipe to another. We find we can taste delicious flavours of Cherry Bakewell, apricot marmalade and vanilla custard, with a side of peppermint tea.

Unlike most distilleries, we run two different spirit runs each year, one for whisky set to be released at a younger age, and one set to be released after ten plus years. The spirit matured for Huntress Orchard Cobbler comes from the distillation in the week after this spirit recipe is switched over - a time where cut points are changed and unusually high fruity compounds flood into the spirit. So fruity, that the whisky is named after one of the team’s favourite desserts.
