KAH Tequila Blanco is a double distilled, un-aged Tequila made from 100% Blue Agave and bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof).

The design of the KAH Blanco bottle is inspired by the Bolivian tradition of the Day of the Dead celebration in which actual skulls of loved ones are kept and brought out on November 8th of each year. After taking the skull to the cemetery, the skull is symbolically fed and given tequila, sometimes even cigarettes. Bolivians believe that this act immortalizes the dead who, in turn, help to protect the living from evil spirits.

KAH Tequila Reposado is made from 100% Blue Agave and aged for more than 2 months in American Oak casks, bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof).

This devilish bottle design takes its cues from Day of the Dead celebrations that take place in parts of Peru. A dance to Satan is performed wearing long, dangling upturned crucifixes, and it is believed that Satan leads this dance Himself! During this ritual to honor the Devil, tequila is poured on the ground as an offering to appease him and keep people safe.

KAH Tequila Añejo is made from 100% Blue Agave and is aged in American Oak casks for at least 12 months, bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof).

The black bottle design is inspired by the Nicaraguan tradition of Day of the Dead. In Nicaragua, in addition to the standard traditions of building a shrine and gift-giving, many people linger and sleep in the graveyard. They believe that this act re-enforces the emotional connection between them and the deceased.

KAH Tequila Extra Añejo is made from 100% Blue Agave and is aged in American Oak casks for at least 36 months, bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof).

Inspired by tradition

Sugar skulls or calaveras has always been a significant part of Aztec and their descendant traditions in the Day of the Dead celebrations. Back then sugar skulls represented deceased ones, often with written names on the forehead of the skull. Nowadays the skull symbol serves also as a popular gift, exchanged by friends and sweethearts as a symbol of a bond of affection so strong it will endure not just throughout this life, but the next as well.

KAH Tequila is produced by Fabrica de Tequilas Finos, located in the town of Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico at the foot of Tequila hill. The area is officially a heritage of humanity site, as declared by UNESCO. Most of the people working at Finos have worked there since its establishment in 2000, and that includes KAH Tequila Master Distiller Arturo Fuentes, who has been dedicated to the production of alcoholic beverages for forty-five years. More than a decade ago he was part of the team that created KAH.

The craft of KAH tequila-making starts with the agave plant. Tequila can only be distilled from a specific variety of agave plant—blue Weber agave (a.k.a. agave azul or agave tequilana). It takes at least 6 to 7 years for an agave plant to grow to maturity before it can be harvested.

Only the “heart” of the plant (piña) that accumulates sugars is used for tequila production.

Each step of the tequila making process—from preparation of the agave, aging in oak barrels, to filling into exceptional tailor-made bottles—is done in the traditional way, with a lot of passion and craftsmanship.

Day of the Dead, Día de los Muertos, is not, in fact, a morbid custom, nor is it only one day. Each year, in most countries that celebrate this 3,000 year-old Meso-American custom, it is divided between October 31st through November 2nd (please see our FAQ section for an explanation of how each day is celebrated).

“KAH” translates to “life” in the ancient Mayan language, and DoD is, in fact, is a celebration of lives lived.

Most common rituals
During the festival, private altars (ofrendas) are adorned with decorative skeletal images (calaveras) or stand-alone skulls (also called “sugar skulls”) and typically festooned with the traditional holiday flower—marigolds. It is thought the golden yellow-orange flower can act as a beacon to guide lost souls to the altar put there by their loved ones. Personal photographs and other colorful ornamentation and mementos are also placed on the ofrendas.

Traditions and rituals vary in countries that celebrate Día de los Muertos and can even differ within the same country. For instance, in Peru, La Diablada, the Dance of Satan (as depicted on our Reposado packaging), and only takes place in Puno. And in Bolivia, actual skulls are placed on ofrendas (as depicted in our Blanco packaging), and this ritual is held later, on November 8th.
