About the Brand

In 2006, a band of dedicated Rye enthusiasts purchased a 500-acre dairy farm in the rolling hills of Vermont's Champlain Valley. Just recently, until his passing the WhistlePig farm had been home to Master Distiller Dave Pickerell. After he graduated from West Point with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Pickerell served in the military for eleven years as a cavalry officer. Later he received a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Louisville, before serving as chairman of the Kentucky Distillers Association and master distiller at Maker's Mark in Loretto, Kentucky for 13 years. "This is what I was meant for," said Pickerell of the whiskey business. After leaving Maker's Mark, Pickerell embarked on a journey to find the perfect rye whiskey. "Rye, in its own essence, is just a brilliant grain... I wanted to do rye because it's America's historical whiskey." During the Revolutionary War, English blockades of American ports prevented the colonists from purchasing molasses used to make rum. As a result, American distillers, including George Washington, started making rye whiskey. This stunning 100% rye is one of the final expressions created by late Master Distiller and whiskey luminary Dave Pickerell. His dream was to create the best aged Rye Whiskey perfect for any rye cocktail. PiggyBack has an intensely powerful, spicy profile, imparted by its time in oak barrels. You can expect complex and smooth notes that shine through, yet don't overpower your drink. An outstanding in any concoction. Aged 6 years and bottled at 96.56 proof (56 is the year Dave Pickerell was born).

EYE: Light copper

NOSE: Copper, fresh rye bread, cinnamon, spice, caramel, orchard fruit, grainy and a light bit of bergamot.

PALATE: Rye bread, butterscotch, cinnamon, raspberry candy, oak, fruit, spice and some citrus.

FINISH: Med-long -> Sweetness, rye spice, copper and oak.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL: Good sense of balance, med-full body and a velvety feel.

This year's release is the first ever majority WhistlePig Whiskey. Comprised of 52% of our 3-year-old Rye Whiskey, blended with 31% 6-year aged whiskey and 17% 10 year aged whiskey from Alberta, Canada. 

This 12 year-old Rye Whiskey is a marriage of whiskeys that have been finished in Madeira, Sauternes, and Port casks. Old World is a result of a 4 year long innovation experiment that included creating and examining dozens of unique finishes, blending, and input from over 500 bartenders. The result is a whiskey that takes the elements that are most quintessential in an American rye - boldness and character - and fuses them with the elegance and grace of an 18 year old Scotch.

One of our oldest whiskeys ever bottled is also the first WhistlePig product finished in Vermont Estate Oak. Harvested right off our farm the wood has more rings than the standard American oak used in whiskey barrels. That gives it more opportunity to impart deeper flavors during maturation. Hitting the bottle at 92-proof, the liquid is assertive and wise beyond its 15 year age statement. And it boasts a score of 97 points from Wine Enthusiast. So we’re clearly not the only ones enamored by this pure expression of Green Mountain goodness.

The data was then analyzed by Masted Blender Pete Lynch who picked 3 of the most popular styles. The tasting and voting took place via a live stream and a winner was picked by the fans from the comfort of their homes. It's a blend of 4-year-old rye whiskey and 5-year-old wheat and barley whiskeys that is pleasantly sweet and spicy, as well as wholly unique. The winner also came as a surprise, as it comprised 45% rye, 30% wheat, and 25% barley. "HomeStock is a truly special blend for us, not only due to how it was made but it's the first time were releasing a whiskey that features something other than Rye. Were thrilled that this blend got voted as the winner, it could be a sign of things to come from us in the future as a natural extension of our famed FarmStock range," says WhistlePig CEO Jeff Kozak.

Rye Crop 001 combines the youthful boldness of WhistlePig's estate whiskey, with the richness of the distillery's best 5 to 6 year old whiskeys and their award-winning 12 year old whiskey. Bottled at 43% abv, the nose has lots of oak, caramel, vanilla toffee and mint. The palate has caramel and cinnamon with baking spices, citrus and stone fruits. This autumn we unveil the latest chapter in The Boss Hog odyssey, a journey through parts previously unknown in the world of whiskey. It begins with some of the oldest Rye on our Farm. Then, a double finish in barrels formerly belonging to Greek fig nectar and scratch made Tentura – a Greek style liqueur inspired by Ancient Patras.

Siren’s Song is the result… an adventure for the ages, befitting its own ode. It beckons you with refrains of supple sweetness and exotic spice. Honoring our five promises for every edition of The Boss Hog, you are guaranteed a stupendous and powerfully complex whiskey; single barrel in origin, bottled at proof and unique from anything you’ve ever before tasted. And for the first time ever, the cask finishes for this particular edition were crafted by our own whiskey makers: Liz Rhoades and Meghan Ireland.

The dynamic duo were inspired by the Muses of Greek Mythology – each of whom is depicted on one of nine bespoke pewter toppers: Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Terpsichore, Thalia, and Urania. Amass them all if you dare; these others of creation also birthed the mischievous and mysterious sirens.

Another first for the collection – the back label of The Boss Hog IX comes equipped with NFC technology, enabling collectors to authenticate and register their treasure with one tap of a smartphone.
