Pratt Standard True Ginger Syrup

Pratt Standard

473 ml
Cocktail

The Pratt Standard Cocktail Company was founded in November 2014 by Tory Pratt. At first, it was called TRUE Syrups & Garnishes and the name was later changed to reflect their goal of connecting people via mixology. Based in Washington, D.C. they specialize in cocktail syrups that are focused on authenticity and flavor and take their inspiration from the pre-Prohibition era. They spread their passion and dedication via the quality of their products as well as through cocktail classes. Pratt comes from a family that has worked in the food industry since she can remember. It wasn't until she bought a high-quality craft gin that she realized a cheap run-of-the-mill tonic simply wouldn't cut it. After much research and experimentation, she ended up with the True Tonic Syrup, the first in the growing lineup of syrups that now include the Ginger Syrup, Grenadine Syrup, Kola Syrup, and Rich Simple Syrup. Now there's even the seasonal Spring Syrups series with Blackberry Mint, Rosemary Grapefruit, and Bitter Lemon variations. The name of the game is super-high quality and versatility, eschewing artificial additives, and creating syrups that complement rather than overpower the spirits they are mixed with. The True Ginger Syrup is Pratt Standard's best-seller. Crafted with whole ginger root, organic evaporated cane juice (instead of the commonly used extract), water, and citric acid, a whole pound of ginger goes into a single bottle of this syrup. It's all-natural and you get to choose your own intensity of the flavor mixed with club soda you can go from ginger beer to ginger ale. As with all their offerings, there's no corn syrup and artificial ingredients. Use this hand-crafted syrup to add a spicy kick to various cocktails such as the Moscow mule or Penicillin. About the Brand

Tobermory, the capital of Mull, lies towards the northern end of the island. The bay is one of the safest anchorages in the Hebrides, indeed the original name for the area was Ledaig (pronounced Led-chig) from the Gaelic, meaning 'safe haven'. This made it the ideal place for the fishing town which was established there in 1788. The name of the town 'Tobermory' was derived from the Gaelic tobar mhoire, which means 'well of Mary', and relates to the well and chapel of St Mary built for the community. As well as Tobermory, the distillery also makes Ledaig single malt. The main difference between the two is that Tobermory is lightly peated and Ledaig is quite heavily peated. In 1797, a local merchant by the name of John Sinclair filed an application to build a distillery but was refused. Permission was finally granted the following year for Sinclair to proceed and Tobermory Distillery was founded. Today, Tobermory Distillery is one of Scotland's oldest operational malt whisky distilleries celebrating its 200th anniversary in 1998. The water source for the distillery is a privately owned Loch close by the Mishnish Lochs, high in hills behind the town. The water from the Loch is richly aromatic with peaty phenols that lend impart a subtle flavor to the whisky. Due to the water's character, the barley malt used remains unpeated. The aging process now takes place at Tobermory’s sister distillery Deanston, near Doune, for a minimum of ten years. This change of location induces further complexities in the final blending. The result is a fresh, lightly peated whisky, medium-dry with a smooth and fruity taste.

Tobermory 21 Year Old

A 21-year-old single malt from Tobermory distillery that has been finished for three years in an oloroso sherry butt, imparting rich, sweet aromas of clove-studded oranges, dark chocolate, vanilla, and oak that fill the nose. The palate offers notes of prunes, walnuts, dark chocolate, nutmeg, and Caramac bars, with hints of cinnamon and leather lingering in the finish.

Black Saddle 12 Year Old Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Black Saddle

750 ml | 45% ABV
Whiskey | Bourbon

In the modern whiskey climate where consumers are more savvy than ever, and more demanding than ever that producers meet at least a minimum transparency requirement, Black Saddle stands out as a black hole completely void of pretty much any information other than the fact that it is Kentucky straight bourbon and at least 12 years old.  The only hint the bottle gives is in small print on the back label, stating that it was “bottled by Frank-Lin Distillers Products in Farfield, CA”.  A further search for Frank-Lin Distillers Products reveals that they are a California-based bottler of a variety of spirits and wines. In Scotland, you would commonly refer to such a company as an independent bottler.  In the bourbon industry we call it a non-distilling producer, or NDP.

So in a nutshell, Black saddle is a 12 year old bourbon distilled somewhere in Kentucky, aged somewhere, containing a mash bill of at least 51% corn and who knows what other grains, and bottled by a relatively obscure company in California.  Alrighty then!  The only other information you can easily find on Black Saddle is that it won a couple of awards at the San Francisco Spirits Competition in 2014.

Tasting Notes

Nose:  Little besides ethanol comes out of the glass before this bourbon has had a good rest.  After some air time, aromas of buttered popcorn, vanilla, and a bit of nougat emerge.

Palate:  Simple and lacking much heft or depth.  The arrival is buttery and the development is filled with vanilla, before a bit of pepper shows up on the back end.  Nothing is offensive or off putting, but it’s devoid of any real complexity.

Finish:  Slightly warming.  Spicier than the nose or palate with some light pepper, vanilla, and a touch of citrus to round things out.  Medium length.
