Shenk's Homestead Kentucky Sour Mash Whiskey
Shenk’s Homestead Distillery Sour Mash Whiskey pays tribute to the legacy of John Shenk, a pioneer in American whiskey history who founded his distillery in 1753—later known as Michter’s in the 20th century. Crafted in Kentucky using the traditional Sour Mash process, a portion of previously distilled mash (known as “setback”) is incorporated into each new batch, resulting in a rich, full-bodied small-batch whiskey bottled at 91.2 proof.
The 2024 release showcases a bold expression with a significant amount of rye, aged in premium French oak barrels from the Vosges region of France. These barrels undergo a natural air-drying process for 24 months before being toasted to precise specifications, enhancing the whiskey’s complexity. A unique grain bill featuring malted rye and caramel malt adds a creamy texture that beautifully balances the rye-forward herbaceous and spicy notes.
Tasting Notes:
- Appearance: Deep amber
- Nose: Crème brûlée with a hint of spice
- Palate: A rich, herbaceous profile highlighted by layers of spice, fruit, and nougat
- Finish: Smooth and creamy
