In creating this classic American gin, we sought to honor each ingredient's distinctive profile through the meticulous practice of fractional distillation, where each element is distilled individually. Through this method, we capture the brightness of Pomelos and Valencia Oranges, the savory notes of Coriander and Cardamom, and the gentle foundation of Juniper Berries and Orris Root. After completing six separate distillations of intentionally sourced botanicals and citrus elements, we bring the distillates together to become this uniquely welcoming spirit.

Inspired by the warm and lively feel of summertime, Todd Leopold conceived this citrus-forward and bright gin to be enjoyed throughout the season.

This gin draws on the warm climates from which its exceptional ingredients are harvested by hand: Spanish Blood Oranges for a rich sweetness, French Immortal Flowers and Juniper Berries for a cool and clean flavor, and Australian Lemon Myrtle for a fresh, citrus finish. Each ingredient is distilled individually to honor its distinctive flavors.

Released in small quantities during the summer, Leopold's Summer Gin complements its seasonal namesake in spirited form.

Maker Notes

Our Absinthe Verte is produced following the traditions of 19th Century European master distillers. That means we start with a grape distillate base (in our case, this means imported Chilean Pisco) and add the required ingredients to constitute absinthe: anise seed, fennel, and grande wormwood. Other botanicals are also added to our small batch still. Following distillation of this blend, we naturally color the result by steeping the distillate in coloring herbs such as lemon balm and hyssop. The result is a brilliantly emerald green spirit that is the perfect touch for classic cocktails such as The Sazerac.

We looked to the orange orchards on the rolling hills of Santa Catarina, Brazil to start. Green and Red Mandarin Oranges have grown in this region for centuries, and it is here that we found the flavors we were seeking. When this fruit is harvested in September, the Mandarin Orange is green in color, yielding an aromatic peel used in cuisines around the world. When these same Oranges are harvested in late December, they yield a reddish fruit that has a floral and intense citrus aroma similar to its cousin, the Tangerine.

Leopold Bros. distills Santa Catarina’s Green and Red Mandarin Oranges separately, blending the two distillates together in the final gin. This allows the two contrasting flavors to work in concert, marrying citrus and floral notes to a piquant finish. In addition to the citrus, we finish the Gin with earthy and savory notes using Orris Root, Juniper, Sri Lankan White Pepper, and South African Rooibos Tea.

Nestled in a Denver industrial complex, Leopold Bros. Distillery is the brainchild of Todd Leopold. His journey through malt and brewing studies, brewing in Germany, and distilling in Kentucky led to the establishment of this distillery in 2008, in Littleton, Colorado. Leopold Bros. celebrates the diversity of Pre-Prohibition American rye whiskey, offering both Pennsylvania rye with traditional spice and dryness and Maryland rye, known for its fruity and floral character. Leopold Bros.' Maryland-Style Rye Whiskey revives a classic style with meticulous yeast selection and aging in charred American oak barrels, resulting in a unique flavor profile marked by woody rye, vanilla, citrus, and cocoa notes.

Situated in an industrial complex on the outskirts of Denver, Leopold Bros. Distillery is the brainchild of Todd Leopold. After receiving his diploma in Malting and Brewing from the Siebel Institute in Chicago, Todd moved to Germany and began working at the Doemens Academy of Brewers and Maltsters in Munich. Then, he apprenticed at four different breweries and distilleries in Germany, before moving to Kentucky to study distilling. In 2008, Todd, along with his brother Scott, moved back to his parents' home in Littleton, Colorado and opened the doors to Leopold Bros. Distillery. Together, the Leopold Brothers attempt to marry chemistry with poetry and it's working. Leopold Bros. American Small Batch Whiskey is made using a traditional sour mash, which is distilled for an entire day in order to extract the full, round flavors of the locally-sourced corn and rye. After distilling the whiskey twice, Todd brings it to 86 proof before barreling it in charred, American oak barrels. By proofing the whiskey prior to barreling it, Leopold is able to ensure that more of the whiskey comes into contact with the barrel, giving it smoother and more robust notes of brown sugar and molasses. The finest blackberries from the Rocky Mountain region are harvested over the summer, juiced, and blended with their small batch whiskey. The result is a rich spirit with notes of vanilla, raisin, and oak imparted by the charred American barrels. This whiskey is naturally colored by the barrel and blackberry juice, and bottled by hand to maintain the integrity of the sweet blackberries and soft finish. This Leopold Bros. whiskey is proudly made with real fruit, and no artificial preservatives. As such, the fruit will naturally oxidize over time. Enjoy within 60 days of opening if left open at room temperature. To preserve your whiskey longer, place it in a refrigerator for up to 120 days. 

Leopold Bros. painstakingly re-engineered a Three Chamber Still from old manuscripts and grew the heritage grain Abruzzi rye that was favored by Pre-Prohibition distillers to resurrect this one-of-a-kind whiskey. 

​The 2022 summer release of the Three Chamber Rye is a Single Barrel offering. Todd Leopold worked through our dunnage warehouse, searching for the best barrels that are at least 5 years old.

He found some commonalities: rich aromas of peanut shell, maple syrup, cocoa nibs, and hazelnuts followed by wafts of fruits like plum, cherries, apricot and orange marmalade. In the finish, you will find the floral notes that are the hallmarks of Three Chamber Rye: lavender, rose, elderflower, and chamomile. Each barrel he selected has differing intensities of these notes and thus every bottle from this collection is marked with the barrel number and the date the barrel was filled. We hope you enjoy this rebirth of an American classic as much as we enjoyed making it.

FOEDER SERIES 25TH ANNIVERSARY BLEND OF STRAIGHT RYE WHISKIES

For years, we’ve toyed with the idea of blending the different styles of whiskey we create at Leopold Bros into a limited release. Taking inspiration from some of Scotland’s great producers, we found ourselves particularly enamored with vatted whiskies that were given time to marry inside large wooden casks, or what the beer world refers to as a foeder.
Seeking a vessel that would allow for such an homage, we reached out to our friends at New Belgium Brewing who, as luck would have it, had a gigantic French oak foeder they were willing to part with. We knew exactly what we wanted to fill it with from the moment it arrived, as we had been experimenting in advance: 8 year old Three Chamber rye whiskey with 5 year old Maryland style rye whiskey at full proof. Tasting the evolution of our Three Chamber rye whiskey over the last few years has been quite the journey, but discovering how that whiskey improves and enhances other styles of whiskey was perhaps the highlight. The viscosity and weight of the Three Chamber rye adds depth and body to our Maryland style rye whiskey, flushing it out with added sweetness and viscosity. Think baking spices and stone fruits galore. After marrying together in our French oak foeder, we bottled the resulting blend at barrel entry proof with no filtration for a full-flavored and robust American whiskey.
