Maker Notes

Rum finished in spirits barrels that held maple syrup. Rich and complex with hints of smoky whiskey.

Mad River Maple Cask Rum begins its life as our First Run Rum, distilled from 100% demerara sugar. We trade barrels with syrup maker Al Wood, of Wood's Vermont Syrup Company, and he returns our rum barrels once he has finished crafting his rum barrel aged syrup. The First Run Rum is then transferred into these maple-cured barrels, and the result is a rum that is smooth and bright with a nose of tropical fruits and butterscotch flavors.

Detailed Description

For Revolution Rye, the mash bill is 100 percent rye (similar to the Canadian rye whiskey used by a few different brands). Interestingly, the Revolution Rye mash bill uses three types of rye grain, including a chocolate malted rye. A portion of the rye is toasted, which Mad River claims releases aromatic chocolate and mocha notes into the distillate.

Nose: Out of a Glencairn glass, the nose has very strong hay and cereal grain notes. Underneath the almost overpowering grassy notes, faint cocoa notes that the toasted rye allegedly adds.

Palate: On the front, the cereal grain notes carry over from the nose. As the flavor unfolds, the cocoa notes make a brief appearance but are pretty quickly overpowered by bitter grassy notes.

Finish: The finish is grassy, dry, bitter, and unfortunately lingering.

Aged premium rum made with raw cane sugar.

At MRD we tried to look at rum with a fresh and distinctly modern,  American view: we age our premium rum, made with cane sugar, in fresh charred American oak barrels — just like our bourbon and rye. The result is simply stunning: First Run Rum – a sipping rum with an initial “hit” of bourbon-like richness rapidly transitioning to a smooth and distinctly rum-caramel finish.  Since its introduction, even the “I only drink whiskey” consumers have been pleasantly surprised by our rum!  All of our sugars are fair trade certified, all natural raw cane sugars sourced from Texas or Malawi, depending on the season.

The "American Spirit" with a unique Vermont twist

Bourbon has become “The American Spirit” in a way that cognac represents France, gin represents England and vodka represents Russia in the hearts of their consumers. We offer our own special Vermont take on the liquid gold so associated with Appalachia. We use only regionally-sourced, non-GMO grains and mature our bourbons on site in the clear, clean air of Vermont.

Our bourbon has a wonderful deep and rich aroma of Vermont-grown corn, smokiness on the palate, and a smooth aromatic finish. Since bringing our bourbon to market in May of 2014, we have been selling it at local farmers markets, the distillery and of course through the Vermont state liquor stores. The response has been overwhelming — we can barely keep it in stock!

Mad River Distillers Silver Oak Rye is a premium American rye whiskey crafted in collaboration with Silver Oak Cellars. Made from carefully selected rye grains, it is aged in charred American oak barrels previously used to age Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon. This process adds complexity, resulting in a balanced and sophisticated spirit with notes of spice, vanilla, and caramel. Mad River Distillers Silver Oak Rye is a testament to the craftsmanship and attention to detail of both distilleries.

Finished in Pedro Ximenez Barrels

Our demerara-based rum takes on a new dimension. After careful aging in a mixture of toasted and charred barrels, the rum is finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, imparting nutty and smoky aromas and flavors. PX is perfect on its own and also makes an incredible cocktail. Visit the Burlington shop for PX cocktails Thursday - Sunday.
