The impact is intense, complex and fruity. The bouquet initially deliver the intense notes of mature fruit, such as cherries, plums and small black berries that are typical of Sangiovese. Then it fades into hints of spices, mint, sweet tobacco and refined balsamic notes on the finish. The notes typical of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are perfectly integrated with the Sangiovese.

Tasting profile: At the palate it is full-bodied and harmonious and characterized by the finesse of its silky tannins. The taste is exalted by a remarkable pleasantness and freshness and a texture in which each varietal adds its own distinctive trait. The finish is incredibly persistent, with an aftertaste of black berry fruit and cocoa.

Maker Notes

The grapes for our Il Ducale wine come from the most prestigious wine-growing regions of Tuscany, including Ruffino's estate vineyards. After we ferment the wine in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for eight days, it receives extended grape skin contact for another eight to 10 days for deep colour and concentrated flavours. We age this wine for 12 months in oak casks of first, second and third use.

VINIFICATION AND AGING

Harvest: Carefully selected grapes were harvested at the end of August through the first half of September. The grapes were destemmed, crushed, and lightly pressed.

SENSORY PROPERTIES

Aroma: Notes of meadow flowers and pleasant hints of pear. The bouquet is fresh and complex, showing refined notes of sage and mint accompanied by an elegant
minerality typical of Pinot Grigio.

Tasting profile: Lumina is very fragrant and elegant. The 2016 harvest is fresh and perfectly balanced with a pleasant roundness. A typical mineral touch completes the finale, which has notes of yellow pear and almond.
