A fabled potion that dates to the 8th century, Alchermes is known for its healing properties.

The potion traveled from the middle east to Europe, where it became a highly prized beverage. Alchermes is colored with a small insect, Cochineal and is scarlet in color. It has been used not only as an enjoyable drink, but as a confectionary ingredient as well. Historic varieties were made with crushed pearls, silk and gold flakes.

TASTING NOTES

The nose is sweet with hints of butterscotch and caramel; aeration expands to include honey oak, and a touch of cinnamon; the opening palate is warming agave without the bitterness. Mid-palate reveals notes of vanilla and oak moving towards a smooth finish.

It’s a rare “evening vermouth” called Dopo Teatro on the wake of Piedmonts tradition to drink a small cup of cool vermouth with lemon zest in the evening, maybe after watching a performance in one of the historic theatres of the Savoy capital.

CHARACTERISTICS

Vermouth Amaro Cocchi has been created according to the original recipe by Giulio Cocchi where Artemisia was enriched with rhubarb, quassia wood, chiretta and a double infusion of cinchona. The addition of Barolo Chinato to the base wine gives delicately red nuances and a further soft and complex note – totally Cocchi style.

HOW TO DRINK IT

The richness of the bitter principles makes this vermouth a tonic aperitif and a pleasant end of meal. Today it is perfect as a bittering ingredient for the best cocktails.

Cocchi Americano is an aromatized wine created in 1891 by Giulio Cocchi and since then produced without interruption according to the original recipe. The name “Americano” is both due to the alcohol made bitter (“amaricato”) by the addition of herbs and spices and to the American habit of drinking vermouth with ice and soda. Produced according to Giulio Cocchi original recipe, Cocchi Americano is recognized in Asti as the aperitif par excellence – a real piece of history of our town. On its label the original futurist rooster designed in the 30’s and representing his aperitif function (“it awakes the appetite”) as well as one of the symbols of the town of Asti.

CHARACTERISTICS

Cocchi Americano, for its nature, represents the link between wine and liquors being a wine plus a small quantity of alcohol bittered (“amaricato”) by the infusion of precious herbs and spices: white wine, sugar, herbs and spices infusion in alcohol and in particular gentian flowers and leaves, Artemisia, Cinchona, bitter orange peel, elderflower and others. To produce Cocchi Americano, white wine is aromatized with the extracts obtained through a cold infusion in alcohol, then refined for balancing the spices’ aromas and tastes.

Tasting Notes

Color: Golden yellow liqueur with orange hues.

Scent: Sweetness of apricot, slight vegetal hint, sweet spices (vanilla) and caramel on the finish.

Taste: The taste is very round and smooth, reminiscent of caramelized apricot compote.

ABOUT THE PRODUCT

The apricot, considered a close cousin of the plum, originally comes from China where it has been cultivated for more than 2000 years. In France, it is thanks in particular to Louis XIV, the “Sun King”, that the apricot takes off. Giffard has selected apricots from Roussillon for their firm, sweet and very fragrant flesh.
