Barrell Bourbon Batch 033 is a marriage of high-rye barrels and high-corn barrels ranging in age from 5 to 9 years old. The high-rye barrels were chosen for their distinct stone fruit, black pepper, and nutmeg notes. The high-corn barrels were chosen for their rich butterscotch, coffee, and citrus notes. Two sets of barrels mingled together for two months, then the balance was adjusted for the most optimal combination.

FLAVOR NOTES

Barrell Bourbon Batch 033 displays all the complexity of a blend of different distillates given time to blossom. Barrel character adds some diverse leafy notes at the margins without an overabundance of extractive woody or spice notes.

Appearance: Citrine set in yellow gold.

Nose: Pear, lemon meringue, and shoofly pie set the stage for a bourbon deftly balanced between freshness and maturity. A bouquet of jasmine, nasturtium, and dandelion speak to a youthful exuberance, while peppermint and gentian root depict an oak barrel just creeping in. A gentle savory character expands into edamame, macadamia nut, and mesquite smoke.

Palate: Champagne, applesauce, and candied grapefruit peel show ample maturity without an excessive oak. The baking spice character is dialed up slightly, exhibiting cocoa powder, allspice, star anise, and juniper.

Finish: A burst of heat rides a wave of minerals across the palate that include limestone, beach sand, and salt-water taffy. Geranium, elderflower, and chamomile reinforce the nose’s bouquet. The finish fades to the slightly bitter prickle of returning gentian root and lime peel, wiping the palate clean.

With a splash of spring water

The palate grows much more viscous; it’s rich and sweet with vanilla buttercream. The savory notes intensify, with pickled caper, fried mushroom and hush puppies leading the way. The fruity notes expand dramatically to include nectarine, honeydew melon, passionfruit, and coconut cream.

The second release in the BLACKENED Masters of Whiskey Series, BLACKENED x Wes Henderson Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Wine Port Wine Casks is the collaboration of Master Distillers Rob Dietrich of BLACKENED and Wes Henderson, Co-Founder of Angel’s Envy. Crafted from a 6-year old Kentucky straight bourbon and finished in white port wine casks, bottled at cask strength and non-chill filtered.

TASTING NOTES

Nose – pear, raisin, cinnamon, and cigar box
Palate – pear, honey, chipotle cinnamon, vanilla, barn hay, and walnut

THE STORY

The “Masters of Whiskey Series” was born from the core tenet of BLACKENED American Whiskey and Metallica…collaboration. This series combines the strengths of Master Distiller and Blender Rob Dietrich and renowned whiskey makers to re-imagine craft whiskey and create more complex expressions. Each of these limited edition whiskies are finished to their own unique playlist which is blasted to the barrels using BLACKENED’s proprietary BLACK NOISE sonic enhancement process.
The inspiration for the collaboration came from BLACKENED’s late Master Distiller and whiskey luminary, Dave Pickerell who was a close friend of Wes Henderson. Representing several generations of Kentucky distilling provenance, Henderson was inducted into the Kentucky bourbon hall of fame, joining his father, Lincoln Henderson, as one of the few father/son inductees in the history of the industry.

Kikori was launched in the Fall of 2015 by Ann Soh Woods, an up and comer in the Japanese Whisky scene. Ann, founder and owner of Soh Spirits, is a bold spark of brilliance, with her fresh take on Japanese whisky. Her imaginative 100% rice based Japanese whisk(e)y -which she chose to spell with an e, to distinguish Kikori from other Japanese whiskies- won gold at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax Bureau didn't know how to classify it at first, but it is a whiskey. It is similar to its cousin Shochu -a Japanese alcohol distilled from rice or sweet potatoes- but is served at a higher 41% ABV than shochu's 25-35%. Wood's had a fascination with whiskey, and her frequent trips to Japan, roused intrigue for the rituals and traditions of Japanese alcohols. Rice is a huge part of Japanese culture. By distilling whiskey from this prominent grain, Woods seeks to capture the spirit of Japan. This is how the imaginative whiskey was born. Introducing bold ideas like these into such a male dominated old school market like the whiskey industry had its challenges. It is always assumed that I am a sales representative when I visit accounts, and it is always a pleasant surprise when they find out I am the founder. Said Woods in an interview with Munchies Magazine. Not to mention overcoming language and cultural barriers. Kikori is distilled in Kumamoto on the island of Kyushu, Japan, the birthplace of Kikori. When approached with the unconventional idea for her Japanese whiskey, distillers were skeptical, but the new drink has gained popularity. Woods depended on a master distiller for the formula, and it has become a success. Kikori states that the rice is sourced locally from the Kumamoto rice paddy. Located alongside the Iwase River, Kumamoto has a distinct volcanic rich soil. The signature rice is cooked in giant steel steamers, and distilled using pure mountain water, the rice ""has been cultivated in southern Japan for over 2000 years in the nutrient rich, volcanic soil of Kyushu Island. The rice grows in the rich volcanic loam formed through eons of lava flow and ash deposits. It's distilled with fresh mountainous waters that flow through ancient volcanic rocks that are millions of years old. The rice gives it a unique aromatic profile with a floral and fragrant aroma and a velvety smoothness to the palate. No coloring or sugar is added, and it ages in American, French, and sherry oak anywhere from three to seven years.

Iowa Legendary Rye sometimes confused as a Canadian Whisky or American Whiskey. Iowa Legendary Rye comes from the great state of Iowa, with its history dating back to prohibition in the Town of Templeton. This all-natural 100 Percent straight rye grain mash is created the old way, some say, but we call it the right way. You will not find any malted barley or corn mash in our rye mash; only 100% rye will do with this complex product. Although much harder to produce in large quantities, we wanted to bring back the true essence, which is rye from a prohibition rye whiskey pot still. While adding an assortment of extra worldly flavors from the grain that can only come from a small batch after distillation. It is then aged in only the best quality new charred American white oak barrels. We are bringing you a wonderful smoky flavor after an aging process of two to four years. We carry an assortment of flavors for your palette and invite you to them all. From the rye grain to our prohibition-style rye whiskey to hand bottling every bottle. We do things the old-fashioned way here. But so far, the old way is and still the right way, according to judges around the US, awarding our rye gold after gold. Against our competition, when asked why not make a straight rye whiskey that carried that unique black pepper taste in your rye mash with a bit of sweet corn whiskey. The answer was easy. You would then be missing 49% of excellent 100% straight rye if we did that.

HERE IS A QUICK FACT WITH THE EMPHASIS ON COCKTAILS.
Just a quick note for all those cocktail lovers out there did you know that rye was the cornerstone and the cocktail recipe developer of the cocktail renaissance. Over the last few decades, this cocktail revival has seen rye re-enter the cocktail recipes of classic cocktails reemerge in recent cocktail trends.

Rye will remain as always as the true American Spirit, and if you have not had the chance to try one of these delicate spirits, we implore you to get your hands on a bottle of red and our unaged rye. These craft spirits, although produced the same way leaving you with fruity notes and herbal notes. We finish our Reserve Red Label in two American oak barrels for its Caramel notes leave a rich finish you will not find anywhere else. Labiette Castille Bas Armagnac VSOP

The name Labiette Castille comes from two specific localities belonging to the village of Sorbets (Gers, France) that are called: “Labiette” on the western part of the vineyards, and “Castille”, to the east. Our logotype represents a Knight of the King, paying tribute to the most famous musketeer D’Artagnan.

Our house was founded in the late 19th century by a native family of Sorbets and is owned by the Lesgourgues family since the mid-1970’s.

Grapes
The house uses the main grape varieties coming from the vineyard located in the Bas Armagnac. Predominantly Baco 22A and Ugni Blanc, and secondary Colombard and Folle Blanche.

Wines
The white wines obtained offers good acidity and low alcohol content that are suitable for traditional distillation.

Distilling
The wines are distilled in a continuous “Armagnacais” column still: this is the perfect way for distilling our wines in Armagnac, hence capturing most of the flavors contained in the wines. Each grape varietal is distilled separately, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the autumn season until Christmas time.

The freshly “brandy” comes out from the column still at around 60% alcohol.

Aging
The “brandies” are then stored in French oak barrels (430L each).
The Labiette Castille Armagnacs age in 100% local Gascony oak. These casks will fit best our Armagnacs, giving them time to grow and to capture the genuine flavors and tannins from the oak. Annually, the cask will lose about 3% of evaporation. This qualitative phenomenon is known as “Angel’s share” (la Part des Anges in French).

Blending
Our cellar master, with the members of the Lesgourgues family, oversees the blending (“assemblage”) choosing the different eaux-de-vie that will be making the future Armagnac.
This blending mission is critical in the house’s capacity to create the most exquisite yet singular Armagnacs.

Bottling
All of our Armagnacs are progressively reduced in alcohol, and most of them are bottled at 40% alc after a non-chilled filtration.

Labiette Castille Bas Armagnac VSOP

This Armagnac is produced in the most coveted region of Bas Armagnac. The aromas display a superb balance between vanilla, dried fruit, and oak. Savor the luscious flavors of oakiness, spice and candied prune.  The Labiette Castille Bas Armagnac VSOP is a cellar master blend of 15 premium brandies; each brandy in the blend is aged from 6 to 10 years in Gascony oak casks

Serve as an aperitif before a meal - neat on ice or slightly chilled. Also, use in premium craft cocktails. 

Produced on the famed estate of Chateau de Laubade, the largest and most-awarded family Armagnac estate in France, this Armagnac is fully traceable from vineyard to bottle.  All four varieties of grapes used in its production - Ugni Blanc, Folle Blanche, Baco and Colombard - are grown, vinified, aged, and blended on the 260-acre estate under the watchful eyes of the Lesgourgues family who have owned the estate since 1974.
