An award-winning distillery, built in 1875, located on the beautiful Sandend Bay, is a nature lover and surfer's paradise on the Moray coast of Scotland. The name Glenglassaugh means Valley of the Grey-Green Place, which refers to its lush coastal surroundings. The Glenglassaugh Distillery coat of arms, which features a design of gannets, stills and barley, is accompanied by the Latin phrase Per Mare, Per Terras, meaning By land, By sea. Not only does it reflect the surrounding coastal environment, it tells the story of how the whisky was historically transported to market, long before the distillery was built.

Glenglassaugh is the only distillery to straddle the Highland/Speyside border, with a coastal position, resulting in taste influence from three locations. The whisky matures in our beach side warehouses exposed to the North Sea air, which lends it intriguing salty notes; a Highland malt with seductive coastal charm. Excelsior, New York’s state motto, means “Ever Upwards,” and our Excelsior Straight Bourbon is made exclusively from Hudson Valley grains, and then aged in a New York-coopered barrel of Hudson Valley oak. The Bottled-in-Bond release of the Excelsior Straight Bourbon fulfills our mission of creating spirits of historic significance.

The Bottled in Bond Act of 1897 was one of the first consumer protection laws in the United States, and mandates (among other things) that the whisky be made, aged, and bottled by the  distillery on the label.

As with all of Coppersea’s “Heritage Methods Distilled” products, we mash Excelsior Bourbon Bottled In-Bond in open-top fermenters for additional local terroir, twice-distill in True Fire Copper, direct-fired simple alembic stills, and barrel age our spirits at the ultra-low proof of 105.
