Barrell Craft Spirits Seagrass Cask Strength Gold Label Rye Whiskey

Barrell Craft Spirits

750 ml | 64.04% ABV
Whiskey | Rye

Rye whiskey finished in Martinique rhum, Madeira, and apricot brandy casks.

Two sets of 20-year-old 100% Canadian Rye barrels were used as the foundation of Gold Label Seagrass - one with bright citrus notes and the other with earthy notes. A portion of the first group was finished in Apricot Brandy casks, a portion of the second group was finished in Martinique rhum barrels, and a blend of the first and second groups was finished in Malmsey Madeira barrels. When each set of secondary maturation flavors peaked, those casks were pulled and slowly married into the final blend.

Gold Label Seagrass represents the pinnacle of Barrell Craft Spirits’ Seagrass series. It is clear from the nose that this Rye Whiskey is old and layered, with savory, herbaceous notes behind the trademark Seagrass tropical freshness. All in all, this whiskey is remarkably flavorful, showcasing the best of the Seagrass profile in a whiskey that can only be made this complex with time in the barrel.

Appearance: Rose gold with flashes of sunflower yellow.

Nose: Classic Canadian rye notes of white flower, toasted grains, and bright honey. As it sits in the glass, toasty tropical notes of apricot and roasted pineapple present themselves. Nutty, raisin-like madeira shows here too, as does a subtle wild-grassy freshness. After a minute, toasted hazelnut and orange blossom drift into focus.

Palate: Ripe Meyer lemon and clover honey show first, with fresh basil and perfectly ripe pineapple taking over in the mid-palate. There are glimmers of deeply aged rye, as this layered whiskey evolves sip to sip. Moments of heat are balanced with a viscous sweetness, brightened by the natural acidity of the Malmsey Madeira finish. Black pepper is present too, as this is a cask strength rye, but the tropical notes win out until the finish.

Finish: A touch of classic rye spice presents itself on the finish, with exotic pink peppercorn and Mediterranean herbs including fresh oregano and sun-dried rosemary. The spice is tempered by a sweet, apricot-dominated viscosity drawing out the finish. Finally, tropical sweetness subsides into more classic mature whiskey notes like leather and nutmeg, leaving your palate with lemon, honey, and cracked black pepper.

Journeyman Last Feather Rye Whiskey

Journeyman

750 ml | 45% ABV
Whiskey | Rye

The Featherbone Factory built by E.K. Warren in the 19th century to manufacture women's corsets sits on the banks of Lake Michigan just across the Indiana border in Three Oaks, Michigan. As the factory changed hands in the twentieth century, it became a production site for everything from buggy whips to pickles. Today, it's home to Journeyman Distillery and Bill Welter, Journeyman's master distiller. Welter, who was formerly a banker in Indiana, began his Journey when his family business was sold in 2006. He moved to Scotland, where he began to learn the art of craft distillation from Greg Ramsay (master distiller at Nant Distillery) and Bill Lark (master distiller at Lark Distillery). After returning to the United States, Welter spent time producing and resting whiskey using a prominent organic & kosher distiller's facility in Chicago before opening the doors of his own distillery in Three Oaks with the intention to offer grain-to-glass spirits from day one/drop one. Last Feather Rye is made by distilling a mash of 60 percent organic rye and 40 percent organic wheat through a 5000-liter, copper pot still imported from Germany. The organic rye and wheat are produced without the use of synthetic fertilizers, artificial pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics, growth hormones, feed additives, or genetically modified organisms and enable Journeyman Distillery and all of its products to be certified organic by the Midwest Organic Services Association. Following distillation, the rye ages to profile in newly charred American oak casks. Using multiple size barrels, each distillation is tailored to the barrel it will age in and bottled once it has reached the desired taste profile. Journeyman Last Feather Rye has notes of ripe banana on the nose, spice and pepper of rye well balanced with the sweetness of wheat, fruit notes and a clean/dry finish - easy drinking.

Rough Rider Bull Moose Three Barrel Rye Whiskey

Rough Rider

750 ml | 45% ABV
Whiskey | Rye

In 1898, Teddy Roosevelt a Long Island native organized the First United States Volunteer Cavalry, commonly known as the "Rough Riders,"in preparation for the Spanish-American War. The regiment comprised 1,250 volunteers from across the country, including cowboys, Native Americans and other pioneers of the West. After seeing action in Cuba, the Rough Riders earned a decisive victory at the Battle of San Juan Hill before returning to Long Island. Upon their return, the soldiers celebrated their victory and presented Colonel Roosevelt with a small bronze statue of a cowboy riding a bucking horse. "There could have been no more appropriate gift from such a regiment,"wrote Roosevelt later. "Most of them looked upon the bronze with the critical eyes of professionals. I doubt if there was any regiment in the world which contained so large a number of men able to ride the wildest and most dangerous horses." Crafted by Long Island Spirits, Rough Rider Straight Bourbon Whiskey pays homage to the First United States Volunteer Cavalry. Made from a mash of 60% corn, 35% rye and 5% malted barley, the bourbon is aged for a minimum of four years in newly charred American oak casks. "After aging, the bourbon is double-barreled, or finished, in wine casks," says Rich Stabile, Long Island Spirits founder. "The wine casks include merlot casks and chardonnay casks, and are chosen from among the finest wineries on Long Island."Before the aged bourbon is poured into the wine casks, though, each wine barrel is washed with a local, Long Island brandy. "The cask finishing wash tempers each wine barrel, resulting in a more mellow, complex bourbon,"adds Stabile. After the bourbon is finished for a few months in the wine casks (the exact time depends on the flavor profile of the batch), each bottle is brought to proof and filled by hand. Rough Rider Bull Moose Three Barrel Rye Whiskey pays tribute to the Progressive Party, which was formed by Roosevelt in 1912. The party became known as the "Bull Moose Party"after Roosevelt, who had just been wounded in an assassination attempt, boasted that "it takes more than that to kill a bull moose." The rye is made from a mash of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, and is matured in three types of casks, each of which contributes unique flavors and aromas to the whiskey. The rye's journey begins in new, American oak casks that add hints of spicy cinnamon and oak to the rye. After its initial maturation, the rye is aged in bourbon casks before finally being finished in casks that were previously used to age Pine Barrens Single Malt Whiskey. This triple-maturation process gives the rye depth and complexity, and balances out the rye's naturally spicy notes with touches of caramel, apricots, buttery bread and brown sugar. Following maturation, the rye is brought to proof and bottled by hand. Each bottle of Rough Rider Bourbon and Rough Rider Rye Whiskey is adorned with an image of the bronze statue given to Roosevelt, and includes a handwritten scrawl of the current batch number. "It's part of the pioneer spirit to try to do something by putting your own signature on it," says Stabile.

Ragtime Rye Bottled In Bond Rye Whiskey

It took over 70 years after the prohibition had ended for the distilling industry to return to New York City. New York had a flourishing distilling industry by the early 19th century, however things changed during the Civil War, when President Lincoln taxed spirits to fund the military. This resulted in many distilleries going underground before the end of the century. The fatal blow for the legal distilling industry in US came in 1920, when the Eighteenth Amendment came into effect making the production of alcohol illegal. It was only in the 21st century that small distilleries started resurging in New York. The New York Distilling Company, located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is one of the oldest distilleries in the city, and was founded in 2011 by Tom Potter, a co-founder of the Brooklyn Brewery, and Allen Katz, one of the nation's leading experts on distilled spirits and cocktails. The distillery specializes in gins and rye whiskeys and has been one of the pioneers of the city's distilling renaissance that builds upon the pre-prohibition heritage. Gin distilling in New York began in the 17th century, when Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam (as New York was then called) started making a version of the Dutch spirit genever. However, it wasn't until the early 19th century when the first commercial gin was produced in the US. Gin was a popular drink during the prohibition, as it was simple to make. American gin is a bit different from London and other European gins as a result of using other botanicals. The Ragtime Bottled in Bond Rye Whiskey features a 75% rye, 13% corn and 12% malted barley mash bill. In addition to meeting the Empire Rye standards, this bottled-in-bond edition of New York Distilling Company's flagship Ragtime Rye is also compliant with the strict Federal Bottled in Bond Regulations. This whiskey is matured in full-size barrels for a minimum of four years and is bottled at 50% ABV.
