"Kirk and Sweeney was the name of a wooden schooner that was best known for smuggling rum from the Caribbean to the United States during Prohibition," says August Sebastiani, President of 35 Maple Street Distillery. Just before it entered the territorial waters of the United States, the schooner would drop anchor and sell the rum to smaller boats which would come up alongside the Kirk and Sweeney. The smaller boats, which were faster and more maneuverable than the boats in the Coast Guard's fleet, would smuggle the rum ashore. As other boats followed suit, the edge of U.S. jurisdiction the line where boats like the Kirk and Sweeney dropped anchor became known as the "Rum Line" and the row of ships waiting to sell rum on the Rum Line were said to be anchored on "Rum Row." The process begins with quality "Blackstrap Molasses" which is the byproduct of hand-harvested sugarcane sourced just south of the distillery. The liquid is carefully fermented, distilled and aged in American oak barrels in the Dominican Republic. The presentation is inspired by an old captain's reserve cigar box, enclosed in a rich mahogany-styled gift box and opens just as a treasure chest might. Rod & Hammer Bourbon, founded by Rodney Rod Cegelski and Hamish Hammer Marshall, is a ten-year-old American classic. It's aged for two years in new American oak barrels, resulting in a smooth whiskey with hints of caramel, roasted nuts, corn, and vanilla. Slo Stills, established in 1988 at Slo Brew brewery, crafts spirits with purified Pacific Ocean water. They began distilling whiskey in 2012 using a rye beer mash and aged it in charred new American Oak barrels. How our products are consumed is as important to us as how they are made. So, we recruited a team of revered cocktail professionals led by Gary (gaz) Regan, including Leo Robitschek and Jeffery Morganthaler, early on and paired them with our British Master Distiller to help us develop our gin. The result is one lively mix of British Sensibility and American Mischief©.

Specifically designed to enhance the flavors of gin cocktails, our inaugural Tod & Vixen’s Dry Gin 1651 is made by macerating botanicals — including juniper, angelica root and rooibos tea — to extract their flavors, then non-chill filtering to retain the unearthed profile. The resulting sip is bold on the entry, giving way to a well-balanced, vibrant gin with a weighty mouthfeel.

WHY 1651?

The short answer is a man by the name of Jellis Douwse Fonda, Eral’s great, great (truly great) Dutch grandfather.

Jellis arrived in New Amsterdam (now New York City) in 1651 and proceeded up the Hudson Valley. On October 19, 1651, the court in Rensselaerwyck (not far from present-day Albany) gave Jellis license to distill liquor, making him the first person in our family to own a distillery. We hope we’re making him proud, though you have to wonder what he would have thought of the Brit we have as our Master Distiller.

American Freedom Distillery was founded by four ex-Green Berets. Currently, they're building the distillery in St. Petersburg, Florida. For now, Horse Soldier Bourbon is distilled in Columbus, Ohio. Days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the USA deployed a small team of Green Berets mounted on horseback. These brave men are honored today by theAmerica's Response Monumentat Ground Zero. This bourbon honors the small unit, nicknamed the Horse Soldiers. Their story was depicted in the 2018 movie 12 Strong, as well as the CNN documentaryLegion of Brothersand the American Response Monument located at Ground Zero in New York City. Made in the heart of America with pride and patience, this Horse SoldierStraight Bourbon is distilled from a mash of 65% corn, 30% rye, 5% barley, using water from limestone aquifers carefully filtered for purity. The spirit is matured for at least 2 years in new, charred American oak casks. Enjoy it in a range of cocktails, sipped neat or over ice.This bourbon is non-chill filtered, well-balanced, and robust with a mellow finish.

The first release in the series combines whiskies with contrasting characteristics, but which come from the same distillery. Even single malts benefit from blending.

Before establishing Virginia's oldest distillery, A. Smith Bowman purchased the 7,200-acre Sunset Hills farm in Fairfax County in 1927. Shortly after establishing his farm, his fields became so abundant that he decided to use the excess grain to create the Bowman bourbon legacy. In 1934, A. Smith Bowman broke ground on the distillery on the farmland, turning it into a family business along with his two sons. He produced the first-ever batch of Virginia Gentleman. Until the 1950s, the A. Smith Bowman Distillery was the sole producer of legal whiskey in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Currently, the distillery's main focus has shifted to producing premium handcrafted small-batch spirit and innovative limited editions. Currently, the historic family-owned distillery has relocated to Fredericksburg, and continue to balance long-standing traditions and innovative, pioneering spirits. In 2016 and 2017, A. Smith Bowman Distillery earned the World's Best Bourbon at the World Whiskies Awards. Following the success of their award-winning limited edition Abraham Bowman Port Finished Bourbon in 2016, this Isaac Bowman Bourbon is aged in charred white oak barrels, then finished in port barrels, the majority of which come from Virginia wineries. The result is a character-rich whiskey with notes of jam, caramel, and spice notes.

Appearance: Worn leather​

Nose: Incredibly fruity, the nose opens with strawberry salt-water taffy, Bing cherry, and raspberry but more exotic fruits lurk in the depths: prickly pear, lychee, blood orange, grapefruit marmalade, damson plum, even tomato. The fruits nearly overpower subtle herbaceous notes of pizzelle, Maraschino liqueur, Cynar, and pipe tobacco. Its sweetness is kept in check by a hint of paraffin and scorched earth.​

Palate: As fruity as the nose, exhibiting strawberry and rose jam, lychee, Maraschino liqueur, and calvados, balanced by très leches cake, hibiscus, and angelica.

Finish: The theme continues on slowly evolving fruit: guava, watermelon, Pink Lady apples; they’re joined by a touch of paraffin from the nose and a spicy signature of candied chili pepper.

With a splash of spring water: Those nose grows beguilingly perfumed, notes of apple blossom, hyacinth, applewood smoke and mulled cider released from the overbearing fruitiness, which has developed a more tropical character in the form of pineapple, mango and papaya. The palate becomes fuller and brighter, notes of mango and peach nectar overlay fresh ginger. Almond milk and white chocolate on the finish are given lift by spearmint.

Kentucky Owl was founded by Charles Mortimer Dedman, a local pharmacist, in 1879. After marrying his wife, Dedman was given a large parcel of land on the banks of the Kentucky River, as a wedding gift from his adopted father who was a local town judge. C.M. Dedman Distillery was established here on the banks of the Kentucky River, producing "The Wise Man's Bourbon" under Distilled Spirits Plant Designation "No. 16", one of Kentucky's original distilleries and part of a booming industry. Kentucky Owl achieved much success and production continued until Prohibition halted distillation. The family-run facility was no match for the "forces of teetotalism, temperance and eventually, the Feds." In 1916, Prohibition left several local distilleries with ample reserves of bourbon. As for Kentucky Owl, approximately 250,000 gallons of bourbon were left over in various stages of aging. Today these reserves would be worth about $40 million in inventory. After Federal agents descended on the Dedman's distillery, the bourbon was seized and shipped up the river by barge to the state capital in Frankfort for "safekeeping" in a warehouse. Kentucky Owl 10-Year Old Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey Batch #3 features citrus, orange juice, grapefruit, oak, anise, and barbeque spice on the nose. The combination of barrel sweetness, caramel candy, creamy vanilla, toffee, and hazelnut coat the palate before moving into a finish of licorice, absinthe, nutmeg, and a mild flash of cayenne pepper. The 10-year old stocks in this Rye #3 deliver a richer, thicker, syrupy mouthfeel. 

Heaven Hill distillery was founded in 1935, immediately after Prohibition ended in the United States in 1933, after a group of investors decided to be ready for the rebounding market. The investors including the famous Joseph L. Beam. Heaven Hill is located on a massive estate boasting 22 multi-story rick-houses across hundreds of acres of land. Now known as the Heaven Hill Bernheim Distillery they have the second-largest inventory of Bourbon Whiskey in the world. It is also the only remaining family-owned distillery in Kentucky. After retiring their hallmark 6-year-old bourbon, on June 24, 2019 Heaven Hill launched this 7-year-old Bottled-in-Bond flagship bourbon. This whiskey scored 92 points and ranked #4 on Whisky Advocate's Top 20 Whiskies of 2019 which stated This whiskey more than proves its merit. It's explosive, bold, and buttery, with warm flavors of honey-roasted peanuts, caramel, chocolate, corn muffins, licorice, and cinnamon, all accented by notes of savory herbs, cloves, white pepper, tobacco, and an earthy undertone. Kaiyo is a Japanese Mizunara oak aged whisky. What makes this spirit so special is the bespoke oak barrel selection. Mizunara oak is some of the most expensive wood available. The impeccable character of the wood imparts distinctive notes onto every spirit. However, its delicate wood grain nature makes it quite challenging to cooper. Kaiyo whisky is aged in handmade, bespoke Mizunara oak casks. These barrels are crafted from slow growth, air-seasoned wood from hand-selected trees. In 2018 Mike Paladini and his wife Kerry had a daughter named Penelope. Their bourbon label was created in her namesake. Founded alongside Danny Polise, Polise and Paladini case distill and age their product in Indiana at MGP using the expert blending and bottling assistance from Castle Rock in Kentucky. Forty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, George A. Dickel was born in a rural town in eastern Tennessee. By 1867, Dickel was an established Nashville merchant but moved his family to the city of Tullahoma (situated in south-central Tennessee), where he purchased the Cascade Hollow Distillery. After working tirelessly at the distillery, Dickel declared that his spirits were of equal quality to the finest scotch, and followed in the Scottish tradition of spelling whisky without an "e." While George A. Dickel Distillery was forced to close its doors as a result of Prohibition, it was rebuilt in 1958 by Master Distiller Ralph Dupps. To ensure the whisky's authenticity, Dupps obtained the original manuscripts in which Dickel detailed his unique recipe and distillation processes. Today, Master Distiller John Lunn carries on the tradition of excellence that has made Dickel whisky a symbol of quality for over a century.
