Distiller’s Note
Barreled and aged in New American Oak, finely blended to perfection in every batch. Remaining true to the artisan craft, we perform the process using the five senses and a desire to “make something beautiful rather than to just make something.” No 14 is finished with the lightest touch of pure Vermont maple. The maple is used sparingly and creates a smooth finish unmatched by any other craft bourbon. The result is an exceptionally American yet distinctly high quality tasting experience. On May 24, 1976, a wine tasting took place in Paris that changed the world’s view of California wines forever. The tasting was the brainchild of Steven Spurrier, an English wine merchant who owned an innovative wine shop and adjacent wine school in the center of Paris. Having been recently introduced to California wines, and curious to see how these newcomers would fare against French wines made from the same kind of grapes, he arranged a blind wine tasting in celebration of the American Bicentennial activities in Paris. The French tasters chosen for the event had impeccable professional credentials. Spurrier chose French wines that were first and other classified-growth red Bordeaux and white Burgundies to be matched against California Cabernet Sauvignons and Chardonnays. The tasting was blind, with the identities of the wines concealed and the labels revealed only after the jury of nine tasters had voted its order of preference.

The unthinkable happened. The 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon was judged the best. The Napa Cabernet had bested four top-ranked Bordeaux, including first-growths Château Mouton-Rothschild and Château Haut-Brion. The 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay from California bested its French counterparts.

Made from the best Mother Earth has to offer: sustainably grown grapes from the Cte-dOr and water from historical French springs. The Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes are hand-selected for this unique bottling of vintage vodka. The wine is fermented and aged individually in oak barrel for 6 months. After blending the wines together, it is then distilled one time in a copper pot and six times in copper columns, followed by filtration four times.

Little did you know, these two blend together quite phenomenally. In fact, they go together so well, they make PB&J jealous. It's nearly impossible to just have one of this delicious treat. But we have to warn you - a night with Skrewball is bound to get a little nutty.

In the early 1930s in the French port city of Marseille, locals ordered anise-based liqueurs from cafes around town while these cafes sold any number of varieties, most of the liqueurs were actually illicit. Perhaps more importantly, many of these same liqueurs were also too sweet for consumers tastes, and so Paul Ricard, son of a wine merchant, diligently began working on a recipe that would more adequately suit the French people's tastes. Ricard set up an improvised laboratory in the small commune of Sainte-Marthe to experiment with new recipes, macerating Provenal plants, fennel seeds, aniseed essence and other herbs in search of the perfect recipe. In 1932, at the age of only 23, Ricard successfully found that recipe, and along with it created the first French long drink one part pastis with five parts water, finished off with ice. So confident was the young man in his product that he named the pastis Ricard, using his education in fine arts to design the product's first label himself. Ricard pastis is still made using Paul Ricard's original recipe, which has remained a secret since 1932. The main ingredient in Ricard is star anise harvested in southern China here, only the best fruits are hand-picked, sundried and distilled onsite to produce anise essential oil. Meanwhile, across the world, liquorice root is sourced from the Middle East (this ingredient is what gives Ricard pastis its legendary yellow hue) to be used in Ricard, along with the final secret ingredients which are said to come from Provenal plants. In Bessa, a small village near Bziers, all of these ingredients are purified, macerated and blended before being filtered three times before bottling. As a result, Ricard pastis offers a refreshing aroma of star anise and licorice, which leads to a medium-bodied palate filled with flavors of fresh fruits, wood and Eastern spices. The finish is long, light and pleasant. Ricard pastis remains one of France's most popular beverages today, and in 2014 earned a score of 93 points (exceptional) at the International Review of Spirits.

After the wonderful reception that the Lagavulin 8 Year Old 200th Anniversary Edition received when it was released in 2016, the Islay-based distillers decided to add this delicious expression to their permanent core range! As Alfred Barnard said of an 8 year old Lagavulin in the 1880s, this stuff is "exceptionally fine".

Detailed Description

A welcome addition to the Lagavulin Core Line and proof that (sometimes) age is not that important when it comes to whisky. Most tasters rank this just as high as the 16 year old and Distillers Edition releases. If anything it is more assertive and more smoky but it remains well balanced and creamy.
