Distillery Information

Founded in 1772 by Philippe Cliquot from a wealthy banking family, his son Franois married Barbe Nicole Ponsardin. Sadly she was widowed at just 27 so took over the stewardship of the champagne company, something she proved very good at.

As malcontents, we’re particular about our whiskey. When we decided to release a rye, we knew it had to be something special to live up to the amazing response received by our bourbon finished in port barrels. Angel’s Envy Rye Finished in Rum Barrels is genuinely unique and worthy of Master Distiller Lincoln Henderson’s legacy. The taste profile of rye whiskey was a perfect fit for a rum cask finish. After sampling over 100 rums to find the right flavor to complement rye whiskey, the team’s decision was unanimous.

Angel’s Envy spends up to 18 months finishing in Caribbean rum casks, resulting in an immensely complex whiskey. The mingling of raw, spicy and earthy rye with the mellow sweetness of rum finishing creates an incomparably smooth and drinkable whiskey, even at 100 proof.

Appearance: Crystal clear quality with a rich, reddish amber color

Nose: Aromas of citrus, caramel candy, maple sugar, vanilla, oak, hazelnut, spice, and sherry wood

PALATE: Sweet rum, sherry wood, and soft oak

Translating as ‘Rare Cask’ in Gaelic, Casg Annamh is created from a limited number of carefully selected casks. These Spanish oak Oloroso Sherry casks/butts have a significant influence on the non-chill filtered liquid and perfectly complement Aberlour’s distillate flavour, bringing sweet and rich notes. This Valpolicella Pinot Grigio can be described as sitting between the richer, more concentrated Pinot Grigio from Friuli to the north, and racier styles from the Veneto at large. The nose is spicy with hints of tropical fruit, the flavors clean and crisp, and the body round and soft with a crisp finish.

Le Rosse is one of the four main sub-plots of the Prunea estate, and is planted entirely to Pinot Grigio grapes. The vineyard rows are planted extremely close together and receive intense pruning, resulting in low yields and excellent richness. All grapes are harvested at night, to retain maximum freshness and acidity.

Maker Notes

Something weird has been going down at the Distillery.  The legendary purifier on the still – responsible for Ardbeg’s exalted balance – is nowhere to be seen. And this whisky – Ardbeg Heavy Vapours – is the consequence. The familiar harmony between peat and floral fruitiness has been disrupted. What have risen are the untamed darker flavours and notes, gathering and filling the senses. It is an ominous dram of dramatic, aromatic pungency. Heavy Vapours will rise.

TASTING NOTES

COLOR: Pale straw

NOSE: SMOKE rises with a cloying sweetness. Intense, pungent and aromatic, a distinctive farmyard scent drifts, along with a crunchy aroma, like CREOSOTE or tarry rope. A splash of water disturbs the vapours and DARK CHOCOLATE CREAM billows, laced with a ribbon of SMOKED ARTICHOKE.

TASTE: Ardbeg’s UNTAMED darker flavours and notes have risen. A burst of bittersweetness SURGES, disturbing ashy coal DUST and casting a HAZE of CARDAMOM, peppermint and COFFEE grits. CLOUDS OF dark chocolate and mentholic eucalyptus ROLL IN, OBSCURING the fruit and floral notes usually found at the heart of ARDBEG. Wisps of ANISEED twists, CINNAMON balls and antiseptic lozenges FLOAT on the palate.

FINISH: The aftertaste lingers LONG and BOLD, with an almost anaesthetising sensation.
