THE UNSUNG LEGEND OF PROHIBITION

In the early 1900’s an African American woman from Missouri, Birdie Brown, homesteaded by Brickyard Creek in Montana along with only her beloved cat. While prohibition gripped the nation, Birdie gained quick notoriety for her home-distilled hooch made from homegrown grains. Her hooch was known for not only being safe, a concern of the era, but for its exceptionally smooth sipping.

Birdie was a strong, independent woman and one of the few African American female homesteaders in the country. She tragically passed in 1933, but her cabin and her legacy still stand today. Passerby even say every so often they catch a glimpse of a black cat perched in the parlor window. We are proud to share Birdie’s story of adventure, fortitude, and entrepreneurship which has until now resided in a forgotten place in distilled spirits history. We raise a glass to Birdie!

HH Bespoke Gin is a remix on a traditional London Dry style gin, with moderate juniper flavors up front, which are balanced by an infusion of lavender, rose hip and plum. Our gin mixes well with everything from a simple tonic water to stronger bitter or sweet flavors.

Yangchon Chungju Korean Rice Wine is a beautifully crafted traditional beverage with deep roots in Korean history. Brewed by Yangchon Brewery, established in 1920, this rice wine follows generations of expertise passed down through three generations of brewers. It’s made from rice that’s grown without herbicides, using a unique method where snails are released into the rice fields to help maintain a natural balance in the environment.

This premium Chungju is made from fermented rice, capturing the essence of the region it hails from, Chungju, in the Chungcheong province of South Korea. The brewing process involves steaming the rice, mixing it with water, yeast, and nuruk (a fermentation starter), and allowing it to ferment for several days to weeks, producing a complex, flavorful wine.

Over the two years that it took Santa Fe Spirits to perfect the recipe for Wheeler’s Western Dry Gin, we found ourselves constantly wandering New Mexico in search of the perfect combination of botanicals to create a classic dry gin with southwestern flair. Much like explorer and cartographer George Wheeler, after whom both this bold gin and New Mexico’s highest mountain are named, we wandered New Mexico’s arid desert basins, lush mountain meadows, and everywhere between with the goal of revealing the subtle secrets of the Southwest to the rest of the world. But where Wheeler used a pen and paper, we used a bottle and a still.

Wheeler’s unparalleled flavor marries bold complexity with sincere terroir. When enjoyed neat, hop flowers and osha root create a vibrant aroma that is a delightful interplay of bright fruit and spice. Upon a solid foundation of juniper, the short-lived, frail, magenta flowers of the local cholla cactus contribute a one-of-a-kind flavor reminiscent of cucumber, but chock full of sweet nectar and delicate perfume. He is god of snow, Son of Sif, step-son of Thor—he is ULLR, the norse god of skiing. He is so fierce a bowman and ski-runner that none may contend! Just as it is good to invoke his name in duels, it is appropriate when you start a run, go off a kicker, or attack steep moguls. He is who you pray to for snow when the mountains are bare and pay homage to with libation at the end of a day on the mountain.

The unique combination of peppermint and cinnamon in ULLR encapsulates the winter sports experience. Clear as melted snow, it starts out with a bracing peppermint flavor, but melts into a warm cinnamon finish. ULLR can be enjoyed in a variety of ways—in hot chocolate, in coffee and cold brew or on the rocks…but it really shines served ice cold and straight up, preferably right out of the snow.

Embajador is a Jalisco Highlands distillery located in Atotonilco. They use locally grown agave matured at 8-10 years before harvest. A combination of traditional (adobe oven) and modern (shredders, column still) methods are used to produce the distillate. The Supreme (aejo) is aged 18 months in a combination of American (ex-bourbon) and French (ex-Cognac) oak.

VINEYARD DESCRIPTION

C.C. Ranch is planted in Rutherford, along the slope of a knoll west of the Silverado Trail. The vineyard grows classic Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon on well-drained, gravelly loam soil and receives a variety of exposures, depending on the block and location. The vines are well balanced and the canopy is opened up to give good light exposure. Nickel & Nickel produces wine from 15 select acres of this 115-acre vineyard.
