Marqus de Casa Concha wines were created as a tribute to the title conferred upon the Concha y Toro family in 1718 by King Felipe V of Spain. The wines are single vineyard, estate bottled wines made in limited production with grapes grown in the prime vineyards of the Central Valley. It took over 70 years after the prohibition had ended for the distilling industry to return to New York City. New York had a flourishing distilling industry by the early 19th century, however things changed during the Civil War, when President Lincoln taxed spirits to fund the military. This resulted in many distilleries going underground before the end of the century. The fatal blow for the legal distilling industry in US came in 1920, when the Eighteenth Amendment came into effect making the production of alcohol illegal. It was only in the 21st century that small distilleries started resurging in New York. The New York Distilling Company, located in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, is one of the oldest distilleries in the city, and was founded in 2011 by Tom Potter, a co-founder of the Brooklyn Brewery, and Allen Katz, one of the nation's leading experts on distilled spirits and cocktails. The distillery specializes in gins and rye whiskeys and has been one of the pioneers of the city's distilling renaissance that builds upon the pre-prohibition heritage. Gin distilling in New York began in the 17th century, when Dutch settlers of New Amsterdam (as New York was then called) started making a version of the Dutch spirit genever. However, it wasn't until the early 19th century when the first commercial gin was produced in the US. Gin was a popular drink during the prohibition, as it was simple to make. American gin is a bit different from London and other European gins as a result of using other botanicals. Dorothy Parker Rose Petal Flavored Gin is a variation of New York Distilling Company's American gin, named after the famous New York writer Dorothy Parker. This fun and fanciful expression is made with an infusion of red and pink rose petals and crushed elderberries. Other botanicals used include juniper berries, coriander, green cardamom pods, cinnamon bark, lemon peel, and orange peel.

TASTING NOTES

NOSE: Delicate notes of oaky whiskey and caramel

PALATE: Wvanilla and warm, smoky notes of oak followed by sweet, butters notes of caramel and subtle hints of savory salt

Sour bourbon mash is comprised of 57% corn 38% rye and 5% malted barley. It is bright, cleaned, and balanced. The corn really shines up front with a round soft sweetness. The rye lends it a subtle spiciness and the malt gives it a nice backbone. At 50% ABV it drinks very nice as a sipper or on the rocks.

Tasting Notes

Color: Clear with an almost unnoticeable trace of tannins from the barrel.

Nose: Bright floral, grapefruit, light vanilla, bread, and corn

Taste & Finish: Sweet cooked corn, soft vanilla, white pepper, grace

Jim Beam Double Oak Bourbon is uniquely aged twice in two separate charred oak barrels. It's first aged in charred American white oak barrels, and then we pour it into different freshly charred barrels to mature for a second time. The added interaction with the oak wood results in a bourbon that's intense in flavor, smooth in taste.

Straw-yellow with a light greenish hue, Vino Bianco D’Italia is intense with a white fruit and a floral, fruity bouquet. A very fresh wine with good balance and acidity.

Detailed Description

For Revolution Rye, the mash bill is 100 percent rye (similar to the Canadian rye whiskey used by a few different brands). Interestingly, the Revolution Rye mash bill uses three types of rye grain, including a chocolate malted rye. A portion of the rye is toasted, which Mad River claims releases aromatic chocolate and mocha notes into the distillate.

Nose: Out of a Glencairn glass, the nose has very strong hay and cereal grain notes. Underneath the almost overpowering grassy notes, faint cocoa notes that the toasted rye allegedly adds.

Palate: On the front, the cereal grain notes carry over from the nose. As the flavor unfolds, the cocoa notes make a brief appearance but are pretty quickly overpowered by bitter grassy notes.

Finish: The finish is grassy, dry, bitter, and unfortunately lingering.

Maker Notes

We have a Confession to make – we didn’t make this bourbon. While we never intended to bottle and sell bourbon we didn’t craft, the need to slow the run on our aging inventory overruled our sense of moral authority in this space. And, as such, the first Chapter of our Confession was appropriately named, “Original Sin.” The process of bringing confession to life was more fun than we anticipated so stay tuned for more chapters in this tell-all story where you can expect transparency and premium brown liquid. As we take this journey together, we promise its conclusion to end in penance.
