Before establishing Virginia's oldest distillery, A. Smith Bowman purchased the 7,200-acre Sunset Hills farm in Fairfax County in 1927. Shortly after establishing his farm, his fields became so abundant that he decided to use the excess grain to create the Bowman bourbon legacy. In 1934, A. Smith Bowman broke ground on the distillery on the farmland, turning it into a family business along with his two sons. He produced the first-ever batch of Virginia Gentleman. Until the 1950s, the A. Smith Bowman Distillery was the sole producer of legal whiskey in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Currently, the distillery's main focus has shifted to producing premium handcrafted small-batch spirit and innovative limited editions. Currently, the historic family-owned distillery has relocated to Fredericksburg, and continue to balance long-standing traditions and innovative, pioneering spirits. In 2016 and 2017, A. Smith Bowman Distillery earned the World's Best Bourbon at the World Whiskies Awards. Following the success of their award-winning limited edition Abraham Bowman Port Finished Bourbon in 2016, this Isaac Bowman Bourbon is aged in charred white oak barrels, then finished in port barrels, the majority of which come from Virginia wineries. Appearance: Worn leather​

Nose: Incredibly fruity, the nose opens with strawberry salt-water taffy, Bing cherry, and raspberry but more exotic fruits lurk in the depths: prickly pear, lychee, blood orange, grapefruit marmalade, damson plum, even tomato. The fruits nearly overpower subtle herbaceous notes of pizzelle, Maraschino liqueur, Cynar, and pipe tobacco. Its sweetness is kept in check by a hint of paraffin and scorched earth.​

Palate: As fruity as the nose, exhibiting strawberry and rose jam, lychee, Maraschino liqueur, and calvados, balanced by très leches cake, hibiscus, and angelica.

Finish: The theme continues on slowly evolving fruit: guava, watermelon, Pink Lady apples; they’re joined by a touch of paraffin from the nose and a spicy signature of candied chili pepper.

With a splash of spring water: Those nose grows beguilingly perfumed, notes of apple blossom, hyacinth, applewood smoke and mulled cider released from the overbearing fruitiness, which has developed a more tropical character in the form of pineapple, mango and papaya. The palate becomes fuller and brighter, notes of mango and peach nectar overlay fresh ginger. Almond milk and white chocolate on the finish are given lift by spearmint.

Kentucky Owl was founded by Charles Mortimer Dedman, a local pharmacist, in 1879. After marrying his wife, Dedman was given a large parcel of land on the banks of the Kentucky River, as a wedding gift from his adopted father who was a local town judge. C.M. Dedman Distillery was established here on the banks of the Kentucky River, producing "The Wise Man's Bourbon" under Distilled Spirits Plant Designation "No. 16", one of Kentucky's original distilleries and part of a booming industry. Kentucky Owl achieved much success and production continued until Prohibition halted distillation. The family-run facility was no match for the "forces of teetotalism, temperance and eventually, the Feds." In 1916, Prohibition left several local distilleries with ample reserves of bourbon. As for Kentucky Owl, approximately 250,000 gallons of bourbon were left over in various stages of aging. Today these reserves would be worth about $40 million in inventory. After Federal agents descended on the Dedman's distillery, the bourbon was seized and shipped up the river by barge to the state capital in Frankfort for "safekeeping" in a warehouse. Kentucky Owl 10-Year Old Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey Batch #3 features citrus, orange juice, grapefruit, oak, anise, and barbeque spice on the nose. The combination of barrel sweetness, caramel candy, creamy vanilla, toffee, and hazelnut coat the palate before moving into a finish of licorice, absinthe, nutmeg, and a mild flash of cayenne pepper. The 10-year old stocks in this Rye #3 deliver a richer, thicker, syrupy mouthfeel. 

Heaven Hill distillery was founded in 1935, immediately after Prohibition ended in the United States in 1933, after a group of investors decided to be ready for the rebounding market. The investors including the famous Joseph L. Beam. Heaven Hill is located on a massive estate boasting 22 multi-story rick-houses across hundreds of acres of land. Now known as the Heaven Hill Bernheim Distillery they have the second-largest inventory of Bourbon Whiskey in the world. It is also the only remaining family-owned distillery in Kentucky. After retiring their hallmark 6-year-old bourbon, on June 24, 2019 Heaven Hill launched this 7-year-old Bottled-in-Bond flagship bourbon. This whiskey scored 92 points and ranked #4 on Whisky Advocate's Top 20 Whiskies of 2019 which stated This whiskey more than proves its merit. It's explosive, bold, and buttery, with warm flavors of honey-roasted peanuts, caramel, chocolate, corn muffins, licorice, and cinnamon, all accented by notes of savory herbs, cloves, white pepper, tobacco, and an earthy undertone. Kaiyo is a Japanese Mizunara oak aged whisky. What makes this spirit so special is the bespoke oak barrel selection. Mizunara oak is some of the most expensive wood available. The impeccable character of the wood imparts distinctive notes onto every spirit. However, its delicate wood grain nature makes it quite challenging to cooper. Kaiyo whisky is aged in handmade, bespoke Mizunara oak casks. These barrels are crafted from slow growth, air-seasoned wood from hand-selected trees. After the whisky is aged, it is finished at sea, imparting even more distinctive character to the spirit. This unique sea voyage departs from Osaka Japan, and the journey can take up to 3 months. Forty years after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, George A. Dickel was born in a rural town in eastern Tennessee. By 1867, Dickel was an established Nashville merchant but moved his family to the city of Tullahoma (situated in south-central Tennessee), where he purchased the Cascade Hollow Distillery. After working tirelessly at the distillery, Dickel declared that his spirits were of equal quality to the finest scotch, and followed in the Scottish tradition of spelling whisky without an "e." Sheep Dog Peanut Butter Whiskey is produced by Sazerac Company in Louisville, Kentucky. This whiskey has natural flavors and caramel color with notes of peanut butter, vanilla, and caramel corn with whiskey undertones. Additional time in the glass delivers out butterscotch notes. An initial thick viscose mouthfeel is rampant with flavors of simple syrup, citrus, and sweet vanilla frosting, followed by caramel, popcorn, and massive peanut butter notes. This bold flavor effervesces into notes of vanilla and toffee. Det Norske Brenneri, or "The Norwegian Distillery" as it is known in English, is situated in the town of Grimstad in the southern part of Norway. This is the first private distillery in Norway since the government dissolved the state monopoly on Spirits-making in 2005. Since then they have been producing various types of spirit including apple brandies, aquavits, gins and whiskies. They utilize traditional techniques and handraft their spirit in small batches. They produce up to 300 liters at a time. This Norweigian distillery only uses local Norwegian berries and herbs, which have a very distinctive flavor profile due to the dynamic climate. Harahorn Gin gets its name from a mountain in Hemsedal, one of the most pristine mountainous areas. The label features the mystical lepus cornutus, a giant rabbit with deer antlers. Distilled from Norwegian potato liquor, the base of this gin is comprised of Rros juniper, Nordmarka blueberries, anise, Oppdal angelica, Grimstad rhubarb, seaweed, wild Sunndal marjoram, and 16 other Norse herbs.
