The original is the Earthquake Zin which came from an old Lodi vineyard planted around the same time of San Francisco’s great Earthquake of 1906. While mulling over a label name in the vineyard, Michael Phillips thought it only seemed fitting to relate this intense wine with the historical quake. This rich, burly Zinfandel offers over the top concentration and intensity that will leave your taste buds trembling! Opening with luscious red fruit and brown sugar aromas, this full-bodied Zin overflows with strawberry jam, molasses and vanilla bean flavors carried though by a fruit laced finish that lingers until the next quake.

For this limited release, we took an exceptional 15-year-old Kentucky Straight Bourbon and finished it for one year in new French Oak barrels sculpted by the virtuoso artisans of Tonnellerie Leroi, one of France’s most renown cooperages. The exquisite bourbon that has emerged from these barrels is as luxurious in taste as it is in appearance.

Bourbon is the quintessential American Whiskey. A storied spirit whose French roots have been strong since its inception over two centuries ago. This 16-year-old Limited Edition Rabbit Hole Founder’s Collection expression is an homage to bourbon’s French connection. Finished in new French Oak, Nevallier Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey is named for the two forests in France, Nevers and Allier, from which the distinctive wood for the barrels was sourced.

Maighstir is born from a collaboration between Kentucky Owl Master Blender, John Rhea and Scotch Whisky Master Blender, Maureen Robinson. Maighstir (pronounced May-stir) is a traditional Gaelic word meaning "Master".

Tasting Notes

Nose
There is a sweet sense of small grains particularly the malted barley, with a hint of sweet caramel. The balance of the small grains (wheat and barley) with the hint of sweet caramel/vanilla, gives the immediate sensation and question in your mind; is this a great bourbon, or is this a great Scotch? Honestly, smelling it will make you feel like you are in a Scotch Whisky warehouse.

Palate
Initially there is sense of warm spicy sweetness from the rye that you might expect from a great bourbon, but then the combination and soft tones from the wheat and barley give a pleasant calming warmness to the tongue. As it melts in the mouth the essence of orange and grapefruit linger behind the soft velvety feel in the mouth.

Finish
In the throat, the soft caramel/vanilla reappears and trails away with a long soft pleasant finish.
