Broken Barrel Mizunara is a true tale of East meets West. This artisanal whiskey blends American corn with Japanese mizunara oak staves. Both are matured together for a rare yet balanced combination. 

Mizunara, literally translates to “water oak.” This oak has become increasingly popular with the global growth of whiskey, and the majority of this oak is now sourced from Mongolia. It has a high moisture content and is much more porous than other commonly used oaks for barrel making. Making barrels out of Mizunara is quite challenging according to many coopers, as the porous properties of the casks are prone to leaking.

Our whiskey, as a result of using this most interesting oak for our Oak Bill™ resulted in a rich, harmonious blend that is both quintessentially American in sweetness and character, while still notably Japanese-styled in its mellow smooth finish. Broken Barrel Isle of Peat explores the concept of reclaiming flavor from oak while also reclaiming oak from the Scots. American whiskey is heavily dominated by Bourbon - a whiskey governed by a rule that a new oak barrel can only be used once. Scotch whisky however follows no such rule, and Americans export millions of ex-bourbon barrels to Scotland where they become Scotch barrels. 

Isle of Peat introduces a curated combination of  American wheat whiskey and American single-malt whiskey, blended together and matured with the charred oak staves from these very Scotch barrels. 

Specifically, Islay Scotch barrels - best known for their unrelenting smoky character and intensity. The reclaimed oak staves are broken down from their barrel form, carefully selected, and submerged into the whiskey we've blended for a minimum of 30 days. Stored in a warm dry environment, these Islay staves impart their smoky finish into every last drop of this incredible whiskey. The finish is a long-lasting smoke show that will leave you wanting more and more.

Kentucky Owl was founded by Charles Mortimer Dedman, a local pharmacist, in 1879. After marrying his wife, Dedman was given a large parcel of land on the banks of the Kentucky River, as a wedding gift from his adopted father who was a local town judge. C.M. Dedman Distillery was established here on the banks of the Kentucky River, producing "The Wise Man's Bourbon" under Distilled Spirits Plant Designation "No. 16," one of Kentucky's original distilleries and part of a booming industry. Kentucky Owl achieved much success and production continued until Prohibition halted distillation. The family-run facility was no match for the "forces of teetotalism, temperance and eventually, the Feds." In 1916, Prohibition left several local distilleries with ample reserves of bourbon. As for Kentucky Owl, approximately 250,000 gallons of bourbon were left over in various stages of aging. Today these reserves would be worth about $40 million in inventory. After Federal agents descended on the Dedman's distillery, the bourbon was seized and shipped up the river by barge to the state capital in Frankfort for "safekeeping" in a warehouse. Currently, Kentucky Owl is in the midst of designing a stunning state-of-the-art distillery park with rickhouses for aging, a bottling center, as well as a vintage dinner train to stop on the property. It will be built at Cedar Creek Quarry in Bardstown. The 420-acre site will boast beautiful lakes with crystal clear, limestone-filtered water that will be used in their whiskey production. Kentucky Owl Dry State 100th Anniversary Limited Edition comes in the wake of the 100th anniversary of the Prohibition. It pays tribute to the period after the Volstead Act sent the country into a "dry state". This rare edition is limited to less than 2000 bottles and combines some of Kentucky Owl's most prized barrels. It comes in an elegant wooden box, made according to design trends of the time and entirely by hand. Bottled at 100 proof, you can expect complex aromas of spice, fruit, and toffee, followed by sweet oranges and caramel, culminating in a satisfyingly long finish.

Their 90-proof bourbon is crafted from the pure Devils River spring waters. The illustrious Texas Ranger John Coffee Hays was one of the first explorers to come across it and named this impressive waterway the "Devils River" in 1840. Nowadays the naturally-filtered limestone spring water is considered the purest water in Texas. In college, Cameron would take frequent trips to the feisty Southwest Texas river, the tributary of the Del Rio that would inspire the name of his new whiskey label as well as provide a pure foundation for the whiskey. Devils River whiskey is distilled using a signature method, in traditional copper pot stills designed for distilling complex, flavorful, dark spirits. Devils River Barrel Strength Texas Bourbon Whiskey is the barrel strength, 117-proof entry in their lineup of whiskey. It's Devils River bringing you bourbon the way it was drunk originally, just like the pioneers would have it uncut and straight from the barrel. Its mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% barley makes for a bold, yet smooth sipper. There's pepper, rye, and oak on the nose, balanced by fruity and vanilla overtones, followed by sweet caramel, as well as more oak and spice on the palate.

It consists of a mash of 51% rye, 45% corn, and 4% barley, which results in an exquisitely balanced taste profile with prominent spice, as well as notes of vanilla, apples, and pepper. The spice balances perfectly with the sweetness of honey and maple and brings some undertones of wood and pepper.

There is no other word to describe this. We took some of our legendary 10 year old Bourbons & finished them in barrels that held New York’s finest artisanal maple syrup from Crown Maple. The result is a rich, creamy-smooth & slightly sweet mouthful of whiskey flavor that is way beyond good. It’s decadent.

Their Straight Tennessee Bourbon has a unique mash bill from Tennessee, utilizing 30% "small grains" to complement the character imparted from spending a minimum of 8 years in American oak barrels. The result is smooth and lasting with notes of vanilla and baked bread layered over a bed of toasted oak. On the other hand, the award-winning Straight Rye Whiskey gets its rest in toasted oak cigar barrels, air-dried in the low-lying mountain region of Vosges, France. This unique, proprietary finishing creates a smoother, incredibly approachable rye with notes of citrus, coriander, and spice. Heaven's Door Highway 61 is a limited-edition expression that is a blend of 5 different juices: 3 different batches of their Tennessee Bourbon and 2 batches of Straight Rye Whiskey. Heaven Hill distillery was founded in 1935, immediately after Prohibition ended in the United States in 1933, after a group of investors, including the famous Joseph L. Beam, decided to be ready for the rebounding market. Heaven Hill is located on a massive estate boasting 22 multi-story rick-houses across hundreds of acres of land. Now known as the "Heaven Hill Bernheim Distillery" they have the second-largest inventory of Bourbon Whiskey in the world. It is also the only remaining large-scale family-owned distillery in Kentucky. In 1837, Henry McKenna emigrated from Ireland to the United States. After spending nearly two decades as a farmer in Kentucky, McKenna founded an eponymous distillery in 1855. At the time, McKenna focused on the production of wheat whiskey (the only crop he was harvesting at the time) and was able to distill enough whiskey to fill one barrel each day. As word of McKenna's high-quality whiskey spread, McKenna was able to triple his distillation capacity and began experimenting with the production of bourbon. Following his death in 1893, McKenna's three sons Daniel, Stafford and, James began operating the business. The 80-proof Henry Mckenna Bourbon Whiskey honors the rich family tradition and pioneering spirit of Henry McKenna, one of the founding fathers of bourbon. He was among the first to age his whiskey in new, charred American oak barrels. Aged for a minimum of 4 years, it has a mash bill of 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% barley and is bottled at 80 proof. The oak, vanilla, and butterscotch on the nose are accompanied by floral, citrusy, and cinnamon notes. The mouthfeel is quite creamy and the oak and vanilla are joined by pepper and nutty overtones. There's a well-balanced sweetness with caramel and dried fruit. The finish is medium and slightly warming.

During the late 19th century, an overwhelming number of distilleries throughout the United States were still not aging their whiskey. As a result, some retailers would add juices and syrups to sweeten the whiskey, while others would add acid and tobacco to give their whiskey its signature amber hue. In 1870, George Garvin Brown a young pharmaceuticals salesman from Kentucky saw the need for a consistently high-quality whiskey that would remain unadulterated after distillation. After saving $5,500, Brown and his brother opened the doors to J.T.S. Brown & Bro. Distillery and began distilling bourbon. Unlike other distilleries at the time, Brown aged his bourbon, which was named Old Forester, in oak casks and bottled it in a sealed glass bottle to ensure authenticity and quality. Since its introduction in 1870, Old Forester has been on the market continuously, even during Prohibition, when it continued to be sold for medicinal purposes. It is the only bourbon continuously distilled and marketed by the founding family before, during and after Prohibition. The Old Forester Signature 100 Proof Bourbon is a tribute to founder George Gavin Brown, carrying his signature on the label he would sign all the bottles himself in the olden days. It's made from a mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, and 10% malted barley and bottled at 100 proof. It's a well-balanced affair with plenty of caramel, cherry, and oaky spice, along with some coffee and chocolate on the nose. The rich palate adds to that some fruity notes, nuts, maple syrup, and caramel. Finishes spicy and complex with pepper, cloves, nutmeg, and oak. Grab a bottle today!

Bourbon that meets these requirements and that has been aged for a minimum of at least two years may be called straight bourbon. Very Old Barton is a Kentucky straight bourbon that has been matured for an average of four to six years in charred, American oak casks before being bottled at 100 proof. As a result, the bourbon has a rich amber color along with an aroma of vanilla beans and chewy leather. Notes of rich caramel, nougat, rye spices and toffee dominate the palate, and lead to a bold finish. The bourbon was named one of the "Best Budget Bourbons" by Serious Eats and "Best Buy Whiskey of the Year" by Whisky Advocate.

Caramel and vanilla flavors from the charred white oak barrels come through first with a spicy rye note from the spirit. The rye becomes more assertive in the finish. Clean, dry and spicy with a nice warmth. We crafted this rye to be smoother and more approachable than many rye whiskeys. Carefully pot-distilled, specifically to be aged in our selection of cooperages and sizes, the spirit is balanced between the spicy grain character of rye and the sweet caramel & vanilla flavors of high quality oak barrels.

The nose has soft caramel and vanilla notes to start out, with a touch of sweet corn at the end. Robust barrel flavors come through on the first sip, with dark caramel and smoky notes, that are followed up by hints of spice from the rye. It finishes dry and smoky on the tongue with a lingering corn after taste.

This is a fine Bourbon and is suitable to simply serve over ice, or try it as this suggested cocktail.

DISTILLING NOTES

This whiskey started out in new, charred American oak barrels that provide the robust caramel and vanilla notes which balance the spiciness of the rye.  After this initial aging, the whiskey is transferred into freshly emptied American “Port” wine casks from our own winery – Mazza Vineyards.  Because the “Port” casks came from our own winery, they were filled with whiskey within 24 hours of the wine being removed.  This ensures the freshness of the barrels, which provides the maximum flavor and aroma impact.  The longer aging in these “Port” casks gives the whiskey a deeper, more ruby color and rich flavors and aromas of red wine, dark fruit and chocolate.

John Emerald Distilling Company is a family-run small batch craft distillery from Opelika, Alabama that has been operational since 2014. It is the first legal distillery that opened in the state since the end of the Prohibition era, a year short of a hundred years later. It all started when John and his son Jimmy Sharp, both homebrewers, started looking into opening a brewery. Finding the market to be oversaturated, they turned to craft distilling instead and started rigorous training and education. They came upon an old cotton warehouse in Opelika, a small and business-friendly town where the mayor welcomed them with open arms. The distillery now operates on 8 thousand square feet and has a tasting room that is open for visitors. They produce several spirits using their 350-gallon hybrid pot, each product named after one of John's and Jimmy's ancestors their (grand) father John Emerald Sharp, a successful businessman, being the distillery's namesake. The spirits include award-winning gin, vodka, rum, and single malt. At the very core of their lineup is the John Emerald Alabama Single Malt Whiskey, the only one to share the name with the distillery itself. The style is between bourbon and Scotch whisky, or as they like to call it American single malt. A part of the 100% malted barley grain recipe is smoked with peach and pecan wood, and Alabama wine barrel staves are added for a touch of smoke and added complexity. The spirit then matures in Missouri Ozark charred oak barrels in a room that simulates the changing of seasons with variable temperature.

Born on September 5, 1850, Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel was the youngest of ten children. His parents were of Scottish and Irish descent. In 1864 Jack learned the art of whiskey making from the preacher and an enslaved man named Nathan "Nearest" Green. Nearest eventually became Jack Daniel Distillery's head distiller. Daniel's distillery founded in Lynchburg, Tennessee in 1866 was the first registered distillery in the country (at the time, distilleries were required to register with the federal government, and the Jack Daniel Distillery was given Registered Distillery Number 1). Today, Jack Daniel Distillery is one of the most distinguished and recognizable names in the spirits industry. Among all their offerings Jack Daniel's Black Label stands out as the instantly recognizable, iconic classic and the brand's flagship. It accounts for 96% of Jack Daniel's sales, making it the best selling whiskey in the world. While the true meaning behind the "Old No. 7" on the label was lost with Daniel's death, it is known that it won 7 gold medals in a very different time. It received its very first at the 1904 World's Fair in St Louis, Missouri, where the spirit reigned supreme over 24 others from across the globe a sign of things to come. The most important step in its creation is still the charcoal mellowing, or as they like to call it "The Extra Blessing". Before going into barrels, the clear, 140-proof distillate is filtered through handcrafted charcoal drop by drop, a process that takes from 3 to 5 days and is the reason behind the Black Label's signature smoothness. The story of Woodinville began with two best friends with a passion to make the greatest craft whiskey in the world. Woodinville whiskeys are made by time-honored traditions of bourbon production, using the highest quality locally grown grains, the best barrels, and coopers in the world, the most technologically advanced distilling equipment, and the wisdom of an industry legend, the late David Pickerell. Woodinville has already received notable accolades including "Craft Whiskey of the Year" for their Straight Bourbon, and "Craft Rye Whiskey of the Year" for their Straight Rye by the American Distilling Institute in 2018 and 2017 respectively. All of the grain used in production is grown exclusively for Woodinville whiskeys on the Omlin Family Farm in Quincy, Washington, run by third-generation farmers, Arnie and Phyllis Omlin. The locally sourced grains are mashed, distilled, and barreled in their Woodinville distillery, before heading over the Cascade Mountains to their private barrelhouses, where Central Washington's extreme temperature cycles stimulate the extraction of natural flavors from the oak. Before being coopered, the barrel wood used for maturation is open-air seasoned for eighteen months, allowing the elements to soften the wood's harsh tannins. The barrels are then slowly toasted and heavily charred to further enhance the wood's most desirable flavors. This meticulous process delivers a hand-crafted spirit with rich aromas of crme brle and spice cabinet, and decadent notes of rich caramel, dark chocolate, and vanilla bean on the palate with a sweet, lingering finish. The Port Finished expression takes their 5-year-old Straight Bourbon for another 6 months of finishing in ruby port barrels. This adds additional notes of candied cherries, dried fruit, berries, and chocolate to the already rich bourbon profile.

Following the end of the American Revolutionary War, Johannes Reginald Beam emigrated from Germany to the United States, and eventually settled in Kentucky County. At the time, Kentucky County was still considered part of Virginia, and was overseen by a military governor named John J. Bowman. After settling in Kentucky, Beam began harvesting corn and set forth a family tradition by distilling the excess grains he harvested into whiskey. Since then, seven generations of the Beam family have been involved in whiskey production for the eponymous company (the company is actually named after James Beam, who rescued it following Prohibition). Knob Creek Bourbon was created by Beam's grandson, Booker Noe, who after joining the family business in 1950 was promoted to Master Distiller just ten years later. Booker talked like a true Kentuckian and was known for his contagious personality, and through his launch of the "Small Batch Bourbon Collection" the collection includes Knob Creek as well as Basil Hayden's, Booker's and Baker's bourbons he is often credited as the father of the small batch bourbon movement. Knob Creek Bourbon takes its name from the small water source, Knob Creek, that ran through President Abraham Lincoln's childhood farm. Booker's vision for Knob Creek Bourbon was that of an honest, quality bourbon that could meet the standards strength, flavor, care, and patience of bourbon made before Prohibition distressed the industry just decades earlier. Like Abraham Lincoln himself, Booker designed Knob Creek Bourbon to be honest, unwavering and full of character. In 2016 the much-loved 9-year-old Small Batch Bourbon lost its age statement due to inventory issues. Now it's making its return in style with the label proudly stating: Knob Creek 9 Year Old Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
